I bought a big mini stallion about a week or so ago. He was thin and I wormed him so a few days later he was thinner than he was when I first got him.. I thought that it was mostly because he had worms and now he is really showing how thin he is. So I went to the feed store and was told to try Nutrena Empower advanced performance formula and mix it with his feed and he should put on some weight. well he has been on it for about 3 days. I fed him 2c of sweet feed and 1c of the Empower and a tbsp of peanut oil in the mix twice a day for 2 days then today I notice that his ribs are filling in a little bet but now his stomach is fat looking. looking at him head on you see him ribs then his tummy goes aways out.. Today I only gave him 1c of sweet feed and 1c of Empower and 1tbsp of the peanut oil twice today... am I doing something wrong or is his tummy just getting fatter first then the rest of him well catch up.. now remember that he is filling up around his ribs and the point of the hip. I have a mini mare that I started feeding the peanut oil to mixed in with her feed and it has done wonders with her coat, mane and tail... should I not feed the oil to him.. he poo is fine,, BIG & ALOT MORE THAN MY MARE... :) but other than that, helthy looking.. I do have them in seperate pins but next to each other though...

do you guys have any ideas?????
open for them..
thanks

oh here is a picture of him the day I brought him home...before worming him...he is right off the truck

doesn't look too thin, but always remember to increase feed gradually. it takes a lot of time to put condition on, and remember you want o be increasing muscle too.

i wouldn't worry too much, if you are really concerned give the vet a call.

He is lean , but not emaciated. I would feed him up vey slowly. Small ponies are prone to laminitis. Why not get a worm count done to see if that is the problem.

I know you said you wormed him but was it a single dose? He could really do with a five day wormer over here we use panacur 5 day guard. I have a fell foal and he looked similar to your stallion , he was wormed on a five day wormer and still was scrawny...fat belly but ribs showing and spine also showing slightly. I put him on a build up feed ...dodson and horrell growth its on the same basis as blue chip feed balancer (but cheaper), a month down the line he looks great and is filling out really well, you have to remember though to introduce new food gradually so as not to imbalance the gut ...(can cause diaohrrea) and also be patient and dont expect to see a change too soon.
If in doubt consult a vet.

yes it was only a one does... I gave him Strongid Paste (pyrantel pamoate) Equine Anthelmintic
I was told to give him another in two weeks then go to once a month..
now I do rotate my wormer every month.... I buy one tub and it covers all three of my horses

I think he could definitely do with a worm count. Try www.horsemenslab.com in the USA they do a similar job to ours in the UK
If you have used pyrantel to worm him it would have limited effect and no effect on encysted stages of redworm.
Hope you get it sorted.

My mini stallion is looking better... that Empower mixed with his feed seems to be working... I has since let him in the field with my mini mare and he seems to be running around building muscle and gaining little weight.. I know that its going to take some time before he really looks the way I want him too...
Boy he is going to be pretty... he looks just like my mini mare only difference is that he has a white 1/4 moon on his forehead
