Hi.. This one is about my other horse that I bought when I bought Thunder (I have him on here under THIN HORSE WITH FAT GUT) like I said they were in a poor condition.
Magics problem is mostly his skin. His muscle tone is low but I think just TLC and working out well mix that. But Im not sure what this stuff is on his back, my mini mare when I first got her had that flacky skin and it cleared up with grooming, but this is much thicker crusty stuff and very thick.. I tried to get pics but you may beable to see what I mean..

Is it dandruff? I think using a medicated shampoo would help clear it up quickly.
Could it be plasma from when he rubs it... if he rubs it?
I wonder, can horses rub their backs even?! I'm having mental images of a horse lying on it back and wiggling around like a dog! They are very resourceful animals! :D

If you scrub it, does it fall off in little chunks of skin and small tuffts of hair?

That's the only other thing I can think of...
You know, I'm a real picker when it comes to those kinds of things! I generally try to get off any scabs/scum and then use a medicated shampoo and apply "lotigen" which is an anticeptic application. All of those kinds of things clear up pretty quickly using the above routine. ;)

I think that what you call rain rot is what we in UK call rain scald and yes, it could be that. The only thing I would add to the above is try using a light-weight, waterproof rug to keep the horse dry. It's caused by a bacteria in the soil and a rug will also have the effect of keeping the bacteria off her skin.

Yes I agree, rugging helps to prevent the onset of rain scald, and prevents it from getting worse - provided you are treating it.
