Just wondering when you start rugging your horse for the winter?

I have started rugging up my Horse..but I have totally clipped him!
He has a full clip leaving only his head unclipped
He wears a light fleece in the stable at night and a lightweight turnout in the day if it has rained or is likely to rain nothing if the suns out!!

I usually don't start rugging my horse up at night until it starts getting colder (below 10 usally or when you start feeling cold yourself), this is usually in October time, usually a thin sheet rug). Then when it gets to end of November/December time they may start having a light rug on during the day and then a thick stable rug on during the night (depending on temperature). Unfortunately I have had to turn may boys out at night with their summer turnouts on because of the wind and rain.

Mine is rugged some of the time now, usually only when it's windy and raining. She's a bit of a wimp and the field seems to really get the wind (there are walls and hedges to hide behind, but apart from the sheltered bit it's really windy). She's had her m/w on as her l/w wouldn't really help much with the lovely weather we had a couple of days ago. Even though she was rugged she was still hiding behind a wall looking peed off when I went to check on her

Mine is rugged in a light weight summer rug in the day and a fleece at night, but hes 18 and feels the cold easily. I decided to put rugs on him when i found him cold one moring and all his hair puffed out like they do when they are cold.

Well i went down to the farm last night with all good intentions of rugging josh,i see the farmer down there. He laughed at me when i told him what i was going to do, told me its not cold enough. He has still got his cattle out, and none of the other horses are rugged down there. So i didnt bother must admit he didnt feel cold to touch, not like me i was freezing. So i think ill leave it off a bit longer he isnt getting hairy yet still got his summer coat.

Don't forget that he is out in it all the time so will get used to the variations in the temperature around him...you are in a warm house and going outside for a while - you'll feel it way more than him!

my horse wont get rugged up till end of oct / nov time. his a hardy horse and only needs rug when weather really bad and cold. hasn't had a rug on at all this year so far. he lives out most of the time.
by leaving their rugs off they can grow a nice thick winter coat.
