View Full Version : Soreness after a trim

The 2y/o gelding I recently bought had his first trim since I've had him last night (his previous owner said she had him done regularly). After the trim he seemed just a little ouchy. He was stalled all night and my barn manager said this morning he was the same. He was turned out all today and when I got him from his pasture tonight he was worse! She said it was probably because it's the first time he has been trimmed up correctly. Should he be this ouchy after 24 hours, it seems to only bother him on his front two.

my mare is always liek this after getting her feet done, for anything up to 4 days. if it gets worse i would keep stabled with some bute or something, but wait and see if it eases up - just think how your fingernails feel when you trim them too short...and you don't need to stand on them! horses support 60% of their weight on there front feet, so stands to reason it will only show up in front. let us know he you get on

When i bought my baby highland the owners had him trimmed the day before he came down to me, unfortunatly they trimmed him back too far and he was really ouchy on his front feet for a few days, to ease it off i cut down two babies nappies and put them on his front feet, secured them with vetwrap and put a sock over the top.....he looked wierd but it cushioned his feet for a few days untill the soreness had died down.

Thanks for the reassurance! After a day or two he seemed to be fine. Just a tad ouchy last night traveling to the left on the longeline- I'm sure this will clear up (or he has realized being ouchy=no work! haha)
Thanks for the posts!
