I haven't had any experience of Parelli myself but I saw a demonstration at Burghley this year and thought it was brilliant!! To be honest I'd always thought this natural horesmanship business was a load of nonsense really but since seeing that I'v been dying to give it a try! It seemed to me to be a really effective way for horse and rider to communicate, the horses looked relaxed, happy and willing to work. Do you know how/where you can learn?

I went to a Parelli clinic this past August and it was amazing. Words can't describe how pleased I am with the results. It really helps you bond with your horse and understand them better. It helps you develop the ability to "think like a horse". I think it'd be an excellent way to start off your relationship with a new horse. The results aren't instant but they're well worth the work. The seven games give you an excellent foundation with which you can build. There seems to be one that can help in any given situation. I've also noticed quite an improvement in my horse's overall attitude. For example, my Arab mare used to be fairly pushy and quite fiesty (always wanted to go faster) and it seemed like I'd spend my entire rides holding her back. Now, I'm able to ride her in a simple rope halter :D. I highly recommend it and it's definately worth looking into. Good luck with your new horse and we wish you all the best.
Happy Riding,

Congratulations on getting your new horse!!
Parelli is great fun, i've beeing doing it for just over 2 years now and still love it. I'm a member of the Savvy Club, through Parelli (www.parelli.biz) which gives you access to local community information. I think the best way to learn is to read as many natural horsemanship books and make a decision on which you would like to follow as even though its all roughly the same there is a few ways with different twists which may suit you better.
I chose Parelli as all you need to know it laid out in handy booklets in a huge pack, and there is a pack for each level.
I have found that Parelli has really helped mine and my horses confidence. I would have never thought i could ride in a rope halter with only a bit of string in my hand a few years ago! My horses are all so much calmer too, i've even taken 2 babies though the program and they are both currently working at level 2, we backed them in the summer and we haven't had a smidge of trouble, they took everything in their strides.
Because i have access to the local communities we quite often get together and have playdays, were everyone brings they're horses to mine and we play, introduce scary stuff to the horses, talk to each other, help each other with any problems we have, etc. and its all so much fun.
And just because its Parelli, despite what some people say, you don't need all the Parelli gear, although it is excellent quality, you can get cheaper alternatives.
You could always ring the Parelli Office and speak to them directly if you have any questions as they are so helpful.
Whereabouts are you guys?

Have to agree with Alibi about the calmness and confidence. we were involved with a Parelli study group years ago here in Australia but got side tracked wih John Lyons techniques.
We still play the 7 games with every horse that comes onto the property as an initial pre training requirement. With 2 important modifications. We begin with Lyons round yard techniques then progress to 6 of the 7 Parelli games (we omit sideways till under saddle)
The pinto pony in our pic on the left was an uncontrollable bolter, rearer and general all round nasty piece of work when we bought him (to save him from the knackery). We used the 7 games and he responded but in the process we learned that any fault in his responses were caused by our inability to fully comprehend the situation. It became obvious that you can never master the 7 games, only continue to learn more about your horse and yourself thru them.
We make natural horsemanship rope equipment that we sell online, so we have a website www.lodgeropes.com .....if you would like to see our horses & ponies please visit anytime.
