Am just thinking up variations to the fruit and veg I use to give Squirrel rewards. Does anyone know if bananas are safe for horses? Wasn't sure as I know in some cases bananas can be hard to digest by humans, and I know horses have incredibly more complex digestive systems than us so thought I'd better ask. :)

Never tried feeding them to the horses but when we had a goat, they gave her a terrible lower gastric distress...

mine spits them across the yard and he will eat anything!!!!-however my friends horse will mug you on a hack if we have a banana during a lunch stop and loves them in his tea....they are ok in moderation but try one not a whole bunch in case yours is as fussy as my lad...however other feeds mine loves are pears, bit of bread, swede, turnip, grapes and bourbon biscuits!!!:D

My horses love bananas!!! and they're still alive so it must be ok for them.
Don't feed green / under ripe bananas, they usually get them when they're been left in the fruit bowl too long and have big brown spots on them - nice and sweet then too!
They also eat apples, pears, mango (remove the stone), plums (they spit the stomes out), oranges (with the skin on), grapes, carrots, turnip, potato (not green ones), cauliflower, cabbage, and i can't think of what else they'll eat! but its most things.
All in modertion of course!

In the amounts that they get them its fine. And they're all still alive and very well so can't be that bad for them!
They probably have one potato a month at the most when they get a veggie / fruit kabab hung up in the stable to play with.

raw potatoes are not a good idea - they have a toxin in. Thats why we don't eat them raw either !

Flora loves bananas :) she really loves the skins too, but it was brought to my attention that they are spreyed with all kinds of toxins (presumably because the skins are not intended for human consumption), so now I deprive her of the skins unless I can find organic.

There was a little shetand at my last yard who would root through the bins for banana skins and then quite happily eat them. I guess it's just a case of each to his own!

Charlie likes bananas, but Shaka used to spit them out. They should be ok, as Charlie hasn't dropped dead yet!

I gave Molly half of my banana for the first time last week. She asked me for a bit first, then she didn't really like the smell of it so she didn't eat it. Just as I was deciding where to throw it away, she took another sniff then ate it very very slowly! Anyway, she came back for some more pretty quick and then I had to wrestle the skin out of her teeth before she had that as well!

I bought Dolly some banana flavoured horse treats and she hates them. I got the "You're a thoroughly stupid woman" look followed by her telling a random passer by "My mummy's trying to poison me"...

Never tried bananas but our donkeys love apples, pears, melon, grapes, peaches, melon skin, strawberries, most soft fruits.
Molly horse is much more suspicicoius of new things so she is very much less adventurous.

I rode in the Dominican Republic last year and they all feed their horses bananas. I think our hotel caught on as I left with handfulls at breakfast time!!!!
My current horse loves Pringles (any flavour) and my childhood pony used to have a cup of tea in an empty ice-cream container and a jam doughnut once a week!

i don't see anything wrong with feeding horses bananas... but i have alway been taught that if you won't feed it to your horse infront of your vet, then you shouldn't feed it to them at all. most friuts/veggies arn't too bad but some people feed horses completely weird "human" food (like pizza, ketchup, gummy worms.....)
