View Full Version : Any suggestions - tail guards that don't rub off in the trailer!

Rupert is great to load and travels quietly and apparently happily, however he sits against the ramp and scrubs his tail. Last time out he had on a tail bandage, with a tail guard over the top and still managed to rub the whole lot wonky enough to rub his tail red raw and very sore

He can rub off a tail bandage and pulls a tail guard either down or to one side..

Suggestions? Currently his tail guard is not one that fits to a surcingle - is this the answer? I am concerned that as he gets everything twisted in knots he would just screw that to one side as well

He hasn't much tail as it is, without rubbing it all away, as well hurting himself..last time the rubbed area healed quick but was totally bald for weeks.

As I am going to be taking him to the arena in the trailer regularly we need suggestions otherwise he will be raw and bald :(

hmm have you tried some cotton wool-type-watting-padding stuff with the self adhesive bandages?

I use a neoprene & velcro tailguard that seems to stay put pretty well. I believe that the trick, with both bandages and tailguards is always to make sure that bottom is a bit tighter than the top but I'm sure there are horses that can make a liar of me on that one :D

I saw a float a few weeks ago with a folded towel gaff-taped to the float door, so the horse isn't rubbing on something hard. I think you'll need alot of tape, though!

Previous experience of this - we used to use a tail bandage and then on top a tail guard which we reinforced with leather. And yes, it was the type that attaches to a surcingle to keep it up and straight.

This was some time ago - when neoprene options were not available.

Current trailer conveniently has back bar which is in front of ramp - so it doesn't happen.

Ours has one too...but he just sits on the bar and STILL scrubs his tail on the ramp  Might see if the bar on the higher setting might stop him though.....hmmmmmmm....

I also have the same problem with Caddie. Her tail has only just grown back from the last time she travelled which was over 6 weeks ago. Like your horse mine rubs her tail raw so I use mud fever stuff on her tail that contains aloe vera. It seems to encourage her tail to grow back quicker as well as soothe the sores. Unfortunately the neoprone tail guard does not work as my mare can rub that down her tail and as it made her sweat as well as rub her tail raw the sores were alot worse because of the sweat. My one did not attach to the rug though so whether that is part of the answer I don't know. I was going to try the tail guard over the bandage but seeing as that doesn't neccessarily work either I'm not sure what the answer is.
