Hi Everyone

I've never posted on here before, but I do enjoy reading the board - so hello everyone.

I'm 32 and had my first ever riding lesson a year ago, and have tried to ride weekly since (although with children and school holidays etc, I have missed a fair bit)

Cantering has always been a bit of an issue for me as I could never 'find my seat' and all of the bouncing meant I never felt safe, then I would become tense, start overthinking and it would just go from bad to worse. It was so bad in May, that I started to feel sick before I rode, the horse would pick up on it and it was just awful, I ended up losing my confidence all together and was too worried to even try.

Anyway, my brilliant teacher worked really hard with me doing lots and lots of work in trot, loads of corners and turns, then put me on a horse with a lovely canter, and let me use a neckstrap for 2 lessons. I was then fine cantering out on hacks or cantering the long side of the school on that horse, but corners were awful and I worried about other horses.

We had a lunge lesson 4 weeks ago on the horse I was riding when I lost my confidence (she's really bouncy and can be moody) and what a difference!!!! I was trotting with no hands or stirrups, making windmills with my arms. Then started working on canter (with a neckstrap) first one handed then no handed!!! I fell off the first time, and only managed 4 or 5 paces the second time, but it has completely changed something in my head.

The fear that was there has just gone, and now when things are getting out of control instead of blind panic, I can actually think and put into practice the things I've learned, and I feel absolutely in control and have a confidence that I never had before. Its very difficult to describe, but it's wonderful!

Last week we went out hacking, we had 5 really good canters through the fields and one brilliant canter up hill through the woods. And today, I was cantering 20m circles - I can't believe it. I feel like I've just passed all of the A level exams ever set, all at once!!!

Anyway, sorry for rambling, I'm just so happy and wanted to share.

That is great Sadie! Cantering can be tough, but once you get it, it is wonderful. I am very happy for you...keep it up! :)

I don't have another lesson until next Tuesday - but my son is in nursery tomorrow morning so I'm doing 'work experience' at the yard. I want to learn enough to be able to share a horse over the next few years, and then when we settle in one place (about 5 years) buy a horse. My older son who's 8 is also riding, and my husband has caught the bug and will be learning after the October half term!! Oliver is only 2, so he has to settle for his Hobby Horse at the moment - but I'm sure he'll follow his brother when he's old enough.

Thanks again for all of your encouragement - have a good week x

I'm really pleased to hear that it IS possible!!

I know what you mean about being really nervous before you get on - I always worry that I will be asked to canter as well :)

Luckily I've got a really good instructor too (I wonder if there are any awards given by BHS to nominated instructors?) and I'm several steps behind you. One day, I too will canter a nice 20m circle..... ;)

But for the moment I'm just working myself up into a worry about my next lesson on Sunday because I haven't been for a few weeks, and am convinced all my leg muscles have vanished....

Well done you!

Hi Wobblydeb

I know it's awful isn't it, especially if you spend hours taking your lesson appart in your head and working out what you did wrong.

For me, the big issue was not being able to relax, the more I tried the worse it got. You're right about having a good instructor, mine doesn't gush or go over the top (true Yorkshire girl!) but I trust her absolutely and she always makes me feel as though we're in it together! She also laughs her head off when I do stupid things. The day I cantered without holding on (and fell off) and did it again she gave me a hug and I almost started crying!! Not at all cool, so glad my son wasn't there.

Hang in there, your breakthrough will come. If I can do it anyone can. (I just hope I hang on to it and don't mess it up)

Also, I just read your post about the ballet, you sound brave to me. I gave yoga a go, but gave up in disgust when I discovered my lack of bendyness - but after reading your post I might dig the video out and give it another go.

That's great that the whole family is into horses. No one in my family understands, really, the joy I get from riding and caring for my horse, so it must be nice to have fellow addicts in your own home!

Hi Alle

Yes, I know I'm lucky - I do hope they stick with it but only time will tell.

You have your own horse? It must be lovely - that's what I'm aiming for eventually. I've just started looking for one to share in my area.

Hi Christy

Thanks for saying Hi, also a LOTR fan - we love the films & books.
Every time we go out for walks my son collects pieces of wood that resemble Gandalf's staff or anything that he can make arrows out of. You should see our porch, it looks like a film set - only thing missing are the good looking heros!
