I've been a foot helper at a Trec Practice Evening and at a Trec Competition.

It's a completely brilliant day out for the horses and the riders. It's a lot of fun, the atmosphere is brilliant, and everyone is very supportive.

It helps if your horse is schooled, but there were a few 3 year olds out at the practice event to get them used to being around strange horses who didn't have a problem.

I think, so long as you can trust your horse not to disappear into the distance with you, you should be fine :)

I've done it and agree it's brilliant fun. You can compete with any size or shape of horse and it's all quite informal and supportive.

Depends what you mean by well schooled - if you mean able to work in an outline or do lateral work etc. then no, it doesn't have to be at all. What it does have to be to do well at it is be obedient and well behaved.

Being able to read and follow a map is a must for the rider too.

Trec consists of 3 phases:

1) Orientation
2) Control Of Gaits
3) Obstacles

This page explains it far better than I can :)

If you look in the BHS book shop they have a rule book which explains everything you have to do, and the kind of obstacles that you will meet, and points given for each one. Hope this helps
