My horse is a great horse...with my husband and trainer. But when I have him alone, he is won't be quick to do things he's asked to. Simple things like leaving the wash rack after I've tacked and saddled him up. He just wants to stay there and will only move quickly when I pick up the crop.

Same thing when I get ready to mount him. He gives me a hard time by stepping back. After several tries, and being persistent, he will stop and let me mount but my trainer nor my husband don't have this problem. I'm the only one that needs the mounting block but I'm sure it's mainly because I don't have the confidence like they do. But since I'm the one who cares for him and loves on him, shouldn't he be wanting to please me?

The mounting trouble just started today. I've only had him 2 weeks. I just don't want this to be a constant problem that I'll have with him. NOt wanting to walk with me when I'm on the ground is really frustrating! I don't think I should have to use force on him.

Any good tips for this novice?

He can probably sense that youre not as confident as them...and is taking advantage of it!
Be confident...and show him that youre the boss! Do it firmly but gently of course!

Its typical horse behavior ;) (like I wont be able to get this horse to do something...but the barn owner can hop on him and get him to do it as if it were so easy...its all about experience and confidence. The smart ones know whos boss ;) )
so dont feel so bad. Once yorue more confident and experience he'll respect you way more. So develop and work on that!

And about mounting issues...
usually if i have to mount a difficult to mount horse...turn them to the wall (so that they are facing the wall or somehwere) so taht they can't walk off. Its quite dangerous if youre horse walks when youre trying to mount.
I know this lady who just broke her wrist last week from trying to mount a horse and than the horse backed up a step and she fell.
So careful!

Good luck with your new horse...
Being able to ride your horse properly is not the most rewarding thign about horse ownership...its the love you give them and the love they'll return back to you.
And stuff like this comes in time...keep working at it!

Don't give up! He probably can sense that you're hesitent. Horses will test you. My mare still is testing me...I've had her for almost a year. She doesn't mean anything malicious by it...just trying to see if she can get away with something, heh.

Be firm, be confident. Show confidence, even if you don't feel it 100%. The more you hang out with your horse, the better you'll get to know each other. Horse ownership is a wonderful thing, so best of luck!
