Hi,

I have a problem with leaning forwards whilst in trot and canter I dont relise im doing it but my instructor tells me I always do it. I roll my shoulders back and this makes a slight difference but i want to improve it more. I was wondering whether it could have something to do with riding quite short, would lengthening the stirrups help?

Hmm... Lengthening your stirrups might help a bit, but not a lot. Do you feel like your sitting up straight? You need to feel (initailly) Like your leaning back, and this will keep you upright.

I'm a big fan of doing work on the longe to improve the seat. At least, that was what helped me when I transitioned from my forward seat to beginning to learn the deeper seat needed for dressage.

Like Horseygal said, it may feel at first like you are leaning back until you get used to the feeling.

It's well worth it though. Once you get your positon back, you'll have a much better feeling for the horse's movements, a more secure seat, and greater ability to effect him with subtle changes in balance.

Hello,

I have the same problem. My boyfriend took some video footage of me riding, and I could see how much I was leaning forward in the saddle, even though It didnt feel like I was leaning forwards.

However when I canter, I feel insecure and tend to lean forwards and I'm forever getting yelled at to lean back :-)

Is there someone that can video you so you can see how you ride? It made a big difference to my seat position, as I could visualise myself hunching forwards and try to correct it.

Leaning forward at the canter????

Sounds like I am not alone, my problem is when asking for the canter, I know my aids are "supposed" to be independant, but I seem to have muchos probs stretching my outside leg back and giving the aid without tipping forward. My instructor was at wits end with me (not really, she has the patience of a saint) so I devised a sure fire method of sitting up........................................

I decided to stare at the ceiling of the ring, assured that there was no way in all that was equine she would possibly notice me with head tipped back, mouth hanging open, staring intently at the swallows nests above.

Somehow......she managed me notice and shut me down. Looks like I am going to have to learn the "right way"

So........can anyone help us tipsy canmterers?
