got to the yard yesterday, angel was in her stable. she was in from tuesday night to wednesday morning and since 2pm yesterday (i got there at about 5), going back out again today lunchtime.

anyway, got to the stable and noticed it looked suspiciously immaculate. after turning over every single bit of straw, i could not find ANY poos in there at all! i got worried because, surely, she would have made at least one poo on the night from tue to wednesday!!!

got the manager to ask for her advice. she said to exercise her and keep an eye out for any pawing/trying to lie down/abnormal behaviour.

well, after i spoke to the manager, i went back to the stable to find angel had just made the biggest poo ever ...

manager assured me that, as long as she's made a poo, she is absolutely fine and that there is a possibility someone skipped out her stable when i wasnt there (2 new staff at the yard who dont know their way round yet ...) ...

is the manager right that, as long as she has poos, its very very unlikely she colics? or should i be worried?

ps: angel is not prone to colic, ive seen her medical records for the past 5 years.

Usually if they poo they are fine as it means there isn't a blockage.

Colic is a generic term for tummy ache, so they could just be feeling a bit off, but not really in a colic trauma where there is a blockage and build up of gass.

I would just keep an eye on her - we lost one to colic and it was very very sudden, she was ok at 9pm and dead next day despite surgery, she was unlucky as they couldn't get to the blockage, which I suspect was a tumour which shifted and caused the blockage, rather than an impaction of food.

You could give her a bit of oil in her food to lubricate her a bit I suppose but just keep an eye on her output! One of our donkeys had a mild colic where she was just out of sorts, a bit uncomfortable, and we had the vet out twice during the day, and he said yes he thought she had a mild colic, but just to monitor her - it cleared up ok.

hi notpoodle,
when mine act like they might colic, i give a warm mixture of
bran
warm water
vegetable oil
half bottle or so pepto bismol

after that, if they still want to lay down, i walk, and walk them.
it has worked every time(knock on wood) and i haven't had to have the vet out(at least for that-ha!)

but if yours pooped, he/she should be fine
regards,
chris

hi julia,
i didn't mean to give the wrong impression. of course i'd call the vet for colic. all i meant was if they show any stomach-ache signs, i start with the mix. i have been lucky and they've all been just fine. my neighbor's horse (same hay supply, same environment) has colicked (sp) 5 times in the past year. vets and all. it's very sandy here and no matter where you feed them (feeders) it ends up in the dirt. a weeks worth of psyllium once a month clears the sand so they don't sand colic. sorry if i was misunderstood. i'm all for vets. i helped fund my vet's vacation to egypt last september with all my calls. i'm glad she's fine!

I currently had an accident with collic. I went down to do my horse on the Monday night and he was really collicy. i called the vet and he gave him painkillers and said it was spasmodic collic which comes in spasuems and he didnt have mcuh of a blockage. He was a bad bed eatter so i put him in a woodchip stable and then thought of it as being from the bed. I had to stay with him and check him through the night every half hour.

I did that and at 4 in the morning he took a turn for the worst! i called the vet again but becasue he passed dropping he wouldnt come and visit becasue he thought it was just a late spasum.

He made a full recoveryy and everything was fine, i gave him a small hay section and mollychalf watered right down which i gave to him early so i can keep an eye after he had eatten and then he went straight back down worse than i have ever seen him. I rang the vet again and he coame immediatly even though he was still ppassing dropping and he had to go up to the surgury becasue he actually had a displaced bowl and his splean was in the wrong postion.

We lost Big Ears to colic - has surgery but blockage too far in to remove, brought her round, but the pain came back so that was that.

Mouse had it mildly one day, just off colour, and the vet monitored. But didn't develop further so she was lucky.

I think you can just have a lot of luck with it one way or another.

that is a sad story, it is so frightening though, i seem to get in a bit of a rut.

Unfortunatly i havent got Ben with me but i will always think of him and will know that he will always remain in a good home that will suit him. There will be no more lies which i was told and he can have a clean slaght
