Hey everyone! I am a beginner rider and my trainer has put me on a green horse. I love him to pieces, but is it best for a green rider to be on a green horse?

hi. I would probably suggest posting this somewhere else to get a larger response, as this section of the board is 'show jumping'. It just would help to get more people looking at it if you know what I mean.

You should always have complete faith in your instructor, and if you're unsure about something then you should ask them to talk about it with you.

Welcome to the board :)

No. Novice riders and green horses are not a good combination. You wont have the experience etc to teach him and give him confidence, and vice versa, which could cause you to lose yours, and neither of you will progress. It takes a confident and experienced rider to bring on a green horse correctly. With a novice they could pick up bad habits etc. Have a word with your instructor and just explain that you would feel more comfortable on a schoolmaster type, that knows whats its doing, and will look after you. You will learn a lot more, and have fun, rather then worrying about giving the right aids and not confusing the green horse. Hope this helps, and you find yourself on a nice schoolmaster to learn on!! have fun!! :)

Thanks for your input! The only problem is that the schoolmaster can only jump 2 feet and I am starting to jump 2" 6". I acctually love my green horse...he is a lot of fun to ride. If i have good confidence on him, is it ok for me to ride him?

hello. Well, you could continue on the schoolmaster for a few more lessons, and work on things like getting the correct striding, how to adjust strides, pace etc (the schoolmaster will help you out if you get stuck!) and then when you switch to the green horse, you will have that bit more confidence and know how, to ask him properly, and even help him out if need be. If you become very confident and happy jumping 2'' then 2'6'' will be no problem. Itll be very rewarding learning together, have fun!!! If you feel confident on the greenhorse, and your instructor is happy, go for it!!! if any problems were to arrise, get back on the schoolmaster!! xxx

yes i also agree to the other commenters i think that you should have faith in your instuctor because she knows what she wants you to do and maybe she has a good reason behind all this:p so i hope you will listen to her well HAPPY TRAILS!!!
