I've recently starting practicing barrels with my horse and he did okay for a first timer, and after about 15 minutes, when I'd turn him around to start again, he caught on and pretty much got himself turned around and was ready to go again (I guess that means he likes it?) I only did it at the walk and trot, although I tried it at a canter one time, he fell out of it before we got to the first barrel. I had him in a regular snaffle bit and he did good, not as much head tossing or resistance. So I dunno.. I'm hoping to practice again tomorrow if it's not raining... wish me luck and if there's anything I need to know... please tell me..

CONGRATULATIONS!
Stick to the walking and jogging around them for now until you have him perfected.
Then graduate to the lope (not full out hand gallop), just a nice steady slow lope until he's perfected there too. The more you do this the better he'll get. Then you can work on speed. Speed is not as important as a clean run. Some of the top speed demons have lost due to knocking over a barrel or two. The slower clean runners were the winners.
Also to help perfect his turns at the barrel, work circles, (away from the barrels) many, many circles until he's balanced and comfortable working circles in both directions.
Good Luck to you and keep us posted.
