I'm just about to enter Max in our first ever SJ class, I'm just going to go for the smallest class (2'3") to see what he does in competitions.
BUT...I was just wondering, am I right in thinking that there are no specific instructions for horse turnout for most local SJ competitions, so it doesn't matter if he's still a hairy monster with an afro mane?

And if it says that the approx height of jumps is 2'3", what do you think is the highest they will be, because any higher than 2'9 and he starts refusing occasionally.

Is there anything else that I should know about, its going to be my first competition. Already nervous!

There are no strict turnout rules for sj, but I like mine to go as tidy as possible, but its down to personal preference.

And being hairy and afro wont make a difference:D

The jumps shouldent go over 2'3 in most comps of that height, should say on the schedule "not to exceed" a 2'3 class certainly should not reach 2'9!

If it has a seperate jump off it may reach 2'6.

Have fun and good luck:D

yup, no real rules about turnout, just try and look neat and clean, really dont worry about his mane, and it is winter so dont worry if hes hairy either. 2"3 classes shouldnt go over 2"3, and if they do it will be very minimal, between 2"3 and 2"6 is the highest it should possibly go :)

Good luck, if theres a clear round before your class id recomend having a go at that, gives you a bit more confidence in the show ground environment before you actually compete :)

good luck and write to us all after !! :)

I'd agree with the other two - as long as you get the mud off him (and you if you're anything like me!!) then you should be fine.

When the class says apporx 2'3" it'll be because some may be an inch under/over because they probably don't go round with a measuring stick measuring them all.

Just out of interest where are you jumping? Am based in London too!

JJ. :)

P.S. Good luck and have fun!!

That's a relief, since its at 6pm on a friday, I don't really have the time to make him look stunning, I'll just settle for getting the mud off! I'm a bit paranoid about his appearance, because he's the only hairy pony at a yard with competition HORSES that all have full clips (and no turnout).
And thanks for the replies re height of jumps, thats made me a lot less nervous!

Sophini, its at Trent Park equestrian centre in North London.
