I noticed yesterday my boy has chipped his tooth at the front, and its black too - he is due for a visit from the scary man wielding a chisel etc. but it could take a few weeks before he comes, not sure how long his tooth has been chipped for, but should i be worried?

How chipped? Missing a bit of enamel, or great big tooth chunk missing?
Since horses' teeth are constantly growing, breaking off a piece shouldn't be too worrisome. It might be uncomfortable, though--if he's not giving you any indicators probably not a major concern. If it's re-shaped the tooth seriously, it will probably require extra dental attention until the chipped area fully growns out.

denim has the same thing at the minute - she's got a fairly large chunk out of one of the front teeth. i have to keep an eye on it, clean it as and when to make sure stuff isn't getting caught in the gap and getting in the gums, and she has to see the scary chisel man six-monthly until it is grown out.
