Free school! It will help you see how big he can go with out a rider, so if he knockes it or somthing ther is no rider interfering {sp} it will also help his striding etc...

yup, i agree with welsh jumper,
free school, or lunge if you have jumping blocks that go higher than 3", there should be no reason why this should be your limit, its just that over 3" syndrome!! Make sure your horse can do it with out you interfering and then have a go with you riding. Try to not interfere too much, as your horse could then lose a bit of confidence if hes not left to pretty much sort it out for himself, but if you lunge/free school first this shouldnt be a problem! :)

Good luck!

I have a 5yo in for jump scooling at the moment -

I have free jumped her over a 1.30 oxer with no probs, but she is still a bit unbalanced with a rider, she pleased me to day as i was scooling over a grid and she jumped the lats 2 parts at 1.05.
Just take it slow, and try him free, then try riding a 1m fence then a 1.05 dont go to big, get used to jumping him over bigger fences first!
