My mums horse has been off work since she went into hospital for a bad kick on her right hind. She was on box rest with walking in havd for just over a month, and she has been turned out now for about four weeks. However today the yard has called up and said that she now has a damaged tendon on her left fore. And she now is on a further three weeks box rest.
Does anyone have any infomation on tendon injuries? Or can anyone lend a word of advise to us. What are the chances of riding the horse in the future - when her tendons are better?

I'm afraid that's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string!! It all depends on what she's done and how. The best person to speak to would be your vet and see what he/she says....

Three weeks rest sounds pretty short for a tendon, the important bit is when you start taking her out again, you don't want her going nuts or it will happen again (probably what caused it in the first place?)

The other thing is lots of cold hosing or ice boots/ice tight paste as this will help reduce the swelling and the heat (tendons don't like heat!!).

If it all heals properly and you strengthen it carefully once she's recovered then it shouldn't hinder her that much at all :)

Have had a couple of these worries, patience is always required!

thanks for your advise -

She has been ridden since July so the injury to her tendon has happened whilst she was in the field. Which is strange because her field isn't deep in mud and she doesn't tend to run around. The vet has been down and she is comig back tomorrow to scan her leg to see what has happened. The three weeks box rest will probably be extended and we don't have a problem with giving her as much time as she needs to recover. She was recovering from one injury and now she is faced with another. We just want her to get better.
