Anyone use this - I have heard that although it is expensive it is actually very good - and at this time of year, and with Penny's legs starting to show possible signs, I am wondering if I should try it.........

I use the Mudguard stuff that you put on their legs, which is excellent!

Or is there something else made by mudguard?

thats the one i use too. Because it contains Aloe vera I have also used it on cuts on horses legs to protect the wound from bacteria and also on one horses tail after she scratched it out in the horse box. Her tail grew back in a couple of weeks.

well I ask as Penny's back legs have now got two small scabs on them, about half way up from her hoof - on the inside of the leg - they are round and have a scab on them. I am worries in case it is mudfever - but I have also wondered if it is mites? Can anyone tell me what I should look for with both - are they similar or not?

Penny has also stamped her back feet occasionally, but she has been caked in mud and it does stop when I wash them down - would that indicate mites or mudfever?

It could well be either. I would try to pick off the scabs and put mud guard on and see if it makes a difference. If she carries on stamping her feet though, it could well be mites in which case I gather frontline is good.

The one that Nutkin has linked is the one i use, its really good, it soothes and heals scabs as it has teatree oil in it, and it also protects, my boys have been using it since September, before they got had any signs of Mudfever and they're all still clear of it.

You only have to apply it every 3 days, then it says you are suppose to wash the legs but i don't, just wash them of every 6 weeks or so and it still works.

Its good for hairy horses as its easy to apply and you don't have to clip off the feather.

I tried the smallest tub first which lasted 3 horses (4th one doesn't suffer at all with it) about 3 weeks, then i bought the biggest tub, which is lasting forever.

I use both the feed supplement and the cream.

I have had lots of recommendations for both and so far (touching wood) so good :)
