Hey, theres not much you can do with mud outside of dumping plenty of gravel and then sand to increase drainage.

If there is a shed of some sort, put bedding in there and clean it daily. Its imperative that the horse have some area they can escape too with no mud. You are right to worry about thrush and mud fever.

Keep an eye on the ankle area, wathing for like flaky fungus stuff. Also pick his feet daily!!! ANd keep his food out of the mud and manure. :)

I've tried the 'mud fever' boots and don't find them particularly effective - they still get wet, mud still gets in and mud fever is STILL a problem!

As pandapotato said, you do need to provide a 'dry' area where they can stand and allow their legs to dry off from time to time - this is the only way mud fever will get any better.

You can apply vaseline to the heel area to help keep the mud away.
Also, when you feed you horse, feed him in a different spot so that he isnt always hanging around the same place.
Put gravel by your gate.
All the best

Hi Have you anywhere you can bring them in to get their feet dry so you can brush the mud off? I do that and then lather their heels and legs with pig oil and sulphur' iff you get a lot on then the mud does not stick and every time I take them out for an hour or so their feet and legs dry off and I reaply the oil and sulphur' it is easy to get and you just have to work out how much sulphur to mix with the oil' start off with a teaspoon to a small washing up liquid bottle of oil' mine now have a good desert spoon full in a bottle' I have a white legged youngster and her legs are great' no scabs or anything and come up lovely and white after a good walk out' it is worth a try and is not expensive' I get it from Country wide store's although now you have to order the sulphur as it has to be stored dry'
