hi everyone, just wondered if you could help

my pony has a ventral oedema on her undercarriage from roughly where her girth would go all the way back to about five inches away from her teats, it has developed rapidly since i first saw it late on tuesday night. it now hangs about 3 inches from her body and is very large in surface area and flat. also if you, for want of a better word, prod it, the indent stays.

The vet has taken blood tests today so at the moment i dont know whats causing it but she suspects either liver, kidney or gut problems. my pony was also given a diuretic sp? as the vet noticed fluid on her lungs.

does anyone know anything about ventral oedemas or them being caused by liver, kidney or gut problems?
any help would be appreciated, i will get blood tests back either tomorrow or saturday and hopefully that should help a bit more

thanks

Gosh I wish I could help, but I have no idea.

I just wanted to wish your pony well... I hope it's nothing serious. Please post and let us know when the vet finds the problem.

To be honest it's probably better to wait for the blood results.

The only time that I've heard of ventral oedema is in cases of ragwort toxicity in association with liver damage. I'm sure, though, that there are many reasons for it hence the blood tests.

The diuretics will help to get rid of the fluid so should help but you should ensure that your horse keeps drinking unless the vet has told you otherwise. Diuretics can 'dry you out' and drinking isn't going to make the oedema worse.

thanks

still waiting for blood tests to come back, they should definately be here tomorrow. she is drinking quite alot of water which i pointed out to the vet.

one person on our yard suggested that it could be poisining but she is stabled and is turned out into the school 3-4 times a week for a few hours to stretch her legs so i cant see what shes managed to pick up that would make her ill.

i'l let you know when i here any more

thanks again

aaagghh

the blood tests were meant to be back with me yesterday and i didnt hear anything from the vet so i phoned them up, they havent got them back yet and the blood testing place say they wont be here untill tomorrow now. so another sleepless night.

the lump seems to be causing her some pain and is getting bigger everyday. she's not got her usual appetite either and i hate seeing her like this. fingers crossed for the best.

okay,

got blood tests back from vet. she says nothing is wrong with her liver so its more likely to be kidneys. she is coming tomorrow to put a catheta in so she can get a urine sample so she can tell more. let ya know when i hear anything else.
