In the Dressage section of the forum, I posted a thread on how to hold a dressage whip, etc. I got that answer, but a discussion arose and I think we're all completely lost!

The question was "Do you hold the whip on the insideor outside?" Some said inside and some said outside. I don't want to proove anyone wrong, or anything, but what's your opinion on this? Inside or outside hand? I said to them I'd tell them when you get back to me.

Thanks,
Maci :)

Normally always in the inside hand- Maci. It is likely to hit the fence or wall in the outside hand in a school too. The only time the whip is normally used in the outside hand is to assist with performing travers, renvers, and half pass, when it is the outside leg that needs reinforcing when moving sideways into the direction of the bend.

Hope this helps!

My instructor tells me to hold it on the outside, and she has competed at national levels. But it seems that the general thought is to hold it on the inside. I wonder if I can think of a nice way to tell her that I disagree with her and want to hold my crop on the inside.

I am going to a show in about 2 weeks, and I want to hold the crop the correct way. Do you think they would take off points for me holding it on the outside? By the way, I am not doing dressage- I carry a crop for jumping. But I hardly ever use it.

Your instructor says to hold the dressage whip on the outside? or the jumpin bat? I always carry the bat on the blind side of the judge, but i believe that is just personal preference. Im no expert, but I dont think it should reallt matter for jumping.

PS If you go into the dressage ring with the whip, you are disqualified, so ya they dock points there ;)
