here are a few pics, from this spring, of a horse i ride sometimes shes a 3 1/2 year old belgian mare named misty. shes without a doubt the calmest horse ive ever ridden. you could seriously fall asleep on her.

the saddle i was using was the only one that fit her wide back, and it wasnt designed with short-legged people in mind. so i had to punch a few holes in the stirrups, so they look kinda strange.

any comments on her, me, or my position would be welcome.

She's a pretty mare, thats true. As far as your position goes, roll back on your hips more, you are almost too upright (like you are riding hunter). Granted, your stirrups like you said are long, try to bring your lower leg a little more underneath you, and that should do it.

Then again, those are mostly final touches. You appear balanced and your general position is great.

shandy- two reins? as in attatched to the bit? no it just looks like that, i think i see the same thing, in the first pic right? thats my outside rein, but it looks like its attatched to a lower slot on the bit.

sterling- im not sure i totally know what you mean by 'roll back on your hips', but ill try to get my lower legs under me more. thanks

well, Imagine sitting more on your back pockets while remaining straight (your spine) and your legs underneath. Better balance, more correct way to ride (best for reining, though great for pleasure). Reason being is in a western saddle you will ride more fluid. Its not easy to get right with all the rest of the components. Most people roll back enough but round their spine or do the opposite and lean too far back. Just remember to stay straight. This makes it a lot harder to get your leg underneath you though ;)

To help get your leg underneath you, while sitting more on your pockets, and be more familiar with it, stand in your stirrups, put your legs back, and then slowly sit, rolling your hips. That should help. Its a lot easier to show, than to explain lol
