I have bean reading your article on pelhams, and find that I do get busy with my hands when I ride and get obsessed about my horses head carriage. I ride her in a french link snaffle at the moment but find it takes me about 40 minutes to get her to work correctly.

I can really relate to your article about changing to a pelham, but in my case I also have 2 other problems to consider first.

Firstly I would like to compete next winter at prelim/novice dressage tests. Will I be able to get her back to a snaffle after if so how long would you advise riding in the pelham for?

Secondly sometimes my horse can be backward thinking not forwards, would this still be the right bit for her.

To try to give you a better description of her I would say for the first 20 minutes of riding her she runs but not nessasarily forward going into the bridle, the following 20 minutes is the her sticking her head in the air and ignoring my requests to lower her head this is the period (not the first 20 minutes as requests for working in a contact are not permitted) I feel like I would like to try the pelham.

I am frustrated at what to do my instructor would not like me to use a pelham, but 40 minutes of running and then resisting are driving me round the bend.

After that we are okay and she works lovely, I love schooling but the thought of all the work that has to go before is tiring?

She is 13 years old and I have had her for 3 years she used to be an affiliated showjumper, will this have had some bearing on her way of going on the flat?
