What surfaces do you have, what ones do you like the best?
if you have bilt or had a top up, how much did you par for each tonne, and how much tonnege did you need.

Have sent off for some info to companies.

Yer i have sand at the mo, is nice in the summer, but does freze, and when it rains gets boggy BUT it does get them fit quick! Also turns white bits orange.
Am thinking of tyers or slica sand, OR PVC granels {sp} depends on cost.

Our yard has three surfaces:
Indoor school (15m x 30m)is sand, which is ok but needs the sprinkler on ocassionally to keep it from becoming too dusty.
The smaller outdoor school (25m x 45m) is Silica Sand and Membrane (kinda like shredded gamgee) mix. It's an excellent surface but needs to be built with good drainage as it can get a little boggy in really heavy, sustained rain. It's quite firm, which gives the horses plenty of support and a very regular surface to 'go' on. Because of it's composition it does also have 'give' without becoming sticky.
The larger outdoor school (40m x 60m) has a sand / rubber chip mix. The surface seems to have plenty of spring too it and the sand keeps it regular. The amount of sand seems to be important as it prevents the rubber from becoming uneven. As with all on them though it does need to be levelled regularly otherwise you get deep areas (specifically corners) in the school.

mmm i suppose it really comes down to price etc.
i thin the best surface ive jumped on is gel track which is sillica sand with some sort of vasaline type covering and also some sort of fiber added. but this is expensive and i dotn think it would work so well out doors.
the next best is rubber small chips of it on sillica sand. this doesnt freeze and the rubber gives a nice bounce, sillica sand is much better for sand schools then normal sand.
plain sand is ok but needs irrigating freezes and in my experience can hold the water.
at college EC they have sand with strips of rubber on top i felt this was awful as it just seemed like the horse would slip if you walked on it and twisted your foot the rubber slid ontop of each other.
check out the H&H as they have loads of companies that do sand schools and surfaces.
