Hello everyone!
Can anyone please help me?! I've been trying to find the translation for the dutch word "rotstraal". It's a 'sickness' :( in the hoof which usualy starts in the V in the middle of the hoof. One of the horses at the barn has it, and it seems to be very stubborn(doesn't go away) ;) So I'm trying to find as much information as possible so I can help in getting rid of it. ;)
Thanks a lot for any help!
Love, :)Janneke :)

Is it thrush? Black gunk, bad smell?

Hi Myrmex.
Yes, it could be trush.
It's a result of not enough care for the hoof and standing in a wet environment. There is a gray substance coming out of the "V" like the stuff you get when a wound infects. It smells bad too.
Do you have any ideas on what I could do? I come there three times a week, with no chance of going everyday.
Thanks again,
Janneke

If it is thrush, there are many commercial preparations you can use, or I believe applying bleach water to the hoof also works. The problem with the bleach water is it will dry out the entire hoof, not just the frog. It is essential that you are able to treat the infection every day, if necesssary, find someone who will do it when you cannot. I would suggest you call a vet and ask what they reccomend to treat thrush. Good luck!

It definitely sounds like thrush - the most popular remedy round here is to apply hydrogen peroxide.

Hi guys
Thanks for your replies. I'll try the H2O2(noty trying to show off or something, just don't know the name in English anymore!)LOL.
Maybe I should say the pony in question isn't my horse, he's a schooling horse at the stables where I take lessons. You'd say the owners should take care of it, but somehow it doesn't seem to work. They are very good to their horses, but this case is really strange. :)
Sometimes the condition of the hoof gets better, just to get worse again the next day.
I can at least clean it out and apply something on it and the three days I'm there!

Hi guys,
just thought I should let you know: The farrier said his hoof is finally getting better for real. (He was trimmed today)
Of course I'll still take care of him as much as possible!
