Im am seriously considering breaking my horse to drive, but I was just wondering what else we could do if this doesn't happen! ;)
I can ride her but she does rear sometimes and she wont ride away from the others- she will lead away, so she has to go out with others horses, my mom is scared to ride out with me with her, and now I have a new horse to ride, I do have someone to ride out with but it would involve taking her to work with me- and I cant pull a trailer!
When she is ridden she wears a treeless saddle and an english hackamore.
We do somw parelli type ground work and worked through most of the exercises in the Kelly Marks Perfect Manners book in about 20 mins!
She long reins like a pro, and has pretty good manners. I could show her in hand but she has a lot of blemishes.
So really im just thinking of a job she could have as I want her to do something.
Any ideas?
Tasha

Hey didn't we all rad this post already - maybe I'm going mad, I personally would rather sort out why she rears and stop it than possibly making it worse by confusing her by breaking her to drive

Also, although I know this is not precisely what you are asking here, but if she is going to drive she needs to be ok going out alone, however if you are lucky she will be like Rupert who naps when ridden out alone but is fine on longreins so presumably will be ok driving.

Its a differnt post.
Before I asked if she would be suitable to drive, now im looking for other ideas! :p
She rears because she has arthritis and when she gets excited or nervous she will rear- she is not in pain- she has nothing to complain about- her rears have got less and less- and she will keep doing it! She is just one of those horses!
Esther- that is exactly what shes like- she will run backwards and plant her feet if I ride her out, but when led she will walk out no problem- tried it the other night and she followed me like a lamb. Also what other exercises would you suggest- ive already going to try your tyre and pallet idea (stole them off your previous posts ;) :D )

So has she been longreined out? Sorry might have missed that one.

I still think that rearing under saddle is a dangerous habit, especially if not pain related, I would not have a horse in harnesss until this was sorted as from janice's warnings regarding backing my own to drive when she reared I heard a lot that would put you off

Make sure you have had someone leaning back on the traces before you try the tyre and make sure it can be released immediately if there is a problem, ideally you need three people for this, one at her head and two controlling the tyre ready to release immediately if she starts getting scared. Two is a minimum, one at her head, one holding the ropes for the tyre. :)

And as Janice said on your last post..rearing really is a serious issue in a driving horse, the only thing that is worse than rearing is kicking.

Good Luck whatever you do with her :)
