Our farrier came by today and told my husband we keep our stalls too clean, because they need moisture in their hooves. But with fly season about to begin, I can't stand to have their stalls dirty, and I certainly don't want them sleeping on it. What are my options?

By all means, keep the stall clean. If your farrier thinks your horse's feet are too dry, then get a hoof moisturizer from any feed or tack store. You can also simply stand them in water about 20 or 30 minutes a day. I wouldn't leave the stall dirty. Besides, when the manure dries, there isn't much moisture in it for the hooves anyway! Happy Trails!

The worst enemy for a horse's foot is urine, it will cause more trouble standing a horse in a urine and manure filled stall. Keep it clean, but try to stand the horse in water regularly, don't use oil, it stops any moisture getting into the hoof and makes things worse.

I know this sounds like a beginner, I am, so I get to ask dumb questions for a while, can you just spray their hooves with water??

Is it just me, or is it weird of a ferrier to say that stalls shouldn't be too clean? (I mean, jeez, it's not like you want your horses to get thrush, right?)

Hi Midnight - yes, you can just spray the hooves with water, if you haven't got anything to stand them in!

Ya, I think your farrier must have meant something else, becasue I have never heard somone say that your stall needs to be a little dirtier. Anyway, I agree witht he other advice given. If your horses feet are too dry, than moisturize them, but still keep your stall clean!!
