today i went to visit another section a to see what seren SHOULD look like - OMG why didn't someone tell me my pony was so HUGE :o her back to basic training has started and she is doing really well but i can only do short amounts of work with her (30 mins roadwork at walk)as she is so fat and unfit. at the moment she is out 24/7 and does get a handful of pasture mix when i go to feed murphy as i feel terrible leaving her out. i have to get some weight off her as spring will soon be on us. she is moving to a smaller field with murphy in the spring but she is currently on 7 acres with only three horses and we are not allowed to section it. i would appreciate any advice as i have only had 15h+ who don't put on weight so easily

Can you give her something that will look like feed to her but not have as many calories as real feed? Like chaff or something? That way she doesn't feel left out when you feed your other horse. She won't know what's in his bucket!

Long slow work is the route to fitness IMHO Build up slowly but even a fatso should be able to cope with an hour of walk as a starter and work your way slowly to being able to ride several hours of walk+trot with periods of canter and gallop along the way for aerobic fitness. Trotting is a very natural pace for horses so don't be afraid of adding trotting into your walking hacks for several minutes at a time. Leave her on the same food as currently and let the work do its magic. :)
