Cross-tie chewing

My horse is constantly chewing the cross-ties and putting them in his mouth. I think he does as a comfort thing, but it gets very annoying. In addition, he "dances" around a lot when I groom and tack him. Does anyone have any tips to stop the chewing on the cross-ties and the dancing (in nonviolent ways).
