HI
I just wondered what you all thought about your horses going barefoot and have you heard of the Strasser method of trimming ?
I read the IH disscusion group allot and they have discussed it several times with the majority voting in favour of not shoeing their horses and think the Strasser method is the best way to trim.
I haven't seen any posts on this board before about going barefoot and I know there are several of you from over the water ( I am from the UK ) so thought it would be interesting to get your ideas on the subject.
Thanks
Jus

hi im from nz, what is "strasser hoof trimming "
just a point to note i have owned horses for 12 yrs and i have never had any of them shod ( i regually trim them), i have had one horse go lame but that wasnt the hoof , he ripped his pastern open by going down a steep rocky bank backwards,
it takes a horse that has been shod over 4 mnths to get its feet to their NATURAL strenght.

Thanks for replying to my post.
Sarsha , you can find out more about Strasser trimming if you do a search on the web for STrasser and barefoot trimming. ( I can't remember the web pages , there are loads ) Below is a brief explanation I found on a web page.
Strasser Hoof Care is a method of looking after your horse and it’s hooves to ensure a lifetime of health and soundness. The knowledge and experience for this method comes from 20 years of research and study carried out by a German veterinarian, Dr med. vet. Hiltrud Strasser.
The method comprises three main parts, natural living conditions, movement and correct physiological trimming.
Hooves must be trimmed to their natural proper physiological form by someone with the knowledge and training to do so. If the horse is not moved 10-15 miles/day the hooves will need regular trimming about once/week.
This natural hoof care system follows as closely as possible the conditions required by the free-living horse – for which the horse is perfectly evolved and adapted. It re-instates the horse’s natural hoof mechanism which results in improved circulation, metabolism and health.
Unfortunatly most people around here think I am mad and a horse can't possible be worked without shoes on. It is a shame you don't live around here Sarsha and you could prove some of them wrong. My own horse is 5 and has only had 1 set of shoes in his life but he only has a grass trim and really needs a proper trim before we start doing some really long rides. ( we have had no problems yet though)
Floppy , I have looked on this forum and the Shoeing forum back untill Jan and couldn't find anything on this subject or am I looking in the wrong place ?
Thanks
