I have been looking around the site having been pointed this way as there had been some interest expressed about EMW "Big Bash" in the summer as well as bitless bridles.... and I was able to help a little with some info. Having visited this seems to be a rather nice place to chat :D .... so I though I would just like to say HI.
Difficult to know where best to do so but since I am an adult lady of more "mature" years ;) that rides a bright bay welsh coblet mare that is 14.2 on tiptoes ....... I thought this might be the best place.
Although I have sat on many sizes of equine - from an ickle feel pony called Vicar that liked to think he could keep up with all the tbs .... to 16.2 TB's - I am best suited, as a short legged 5'2" person, to my welsh coblet Taz.
She came into my life via a rescue centre .... and suffice it to say we had a few "issues" to deal with  but now we have a happy partnership hacking and driving around Herefordshire making the occasional foray out to pleasure / endurance rides. Taz has done showjumping with my daughter and we like fun shows where we do handy pony etc - even gymkanha games (sedately !) when I can do the things I never got to do as a child :D
I am looking forward to getting to know you all :)

bonjour :D haven't been on this site that long . . . though it must be a little while now
i have donny, little 13.1hh connie type thing who i've owned for nearly six years, as well as a rather larger beastie. plus i seem to get to ride other people's ponies quite a lot (not that i'm complaining :D !) and love riding littlies, they're so fantastic and normally more difficult than bigger horses in my experience!! donny certainly can keep up with poppy (15.2hh tbx) and has never come across anything he can't jump . . .
it's rather unfortunate that my feet now touch the ground!
welcome to nr :)

and thanks for the welcoming intros :)
I am sure Drummer will love the fun ride ..... we have been on several (prefer the EGB pleasure rides as there are no jumps and RULES to be followed so sometimes a little more sedate :o )
CD - even on a 13.3 no danger MY feet touching the ground ... although I think Id squish poor ickle donny
ooooooooh there are getting to be a fair few of us bitless folks around -....
have fun all

Sarah-lee used to do a lot of fun rides BFM(Before Foot and mouth)she could never understand why some animals would be so silly as putting shoes on their feet in the first place but then "short ears" don't have much space between them :D
I only ride in a bit because thats what I was made to do as a child and I've never had a lesson since.I'd like to try it on Malaga when we have done the ground work (What you see on the ground is usually what you get in the saddle)but is it wise to ride a novice bitless? Where do you stand insurance wise?

Hi! Welcome Fellow Herefordshire resisdant :D !! Although my address is Gloucestershire I am many miles away from glos and on the border of Hereford! I'm owned by one 16hh Irish TB called Flyte, were bitless when ever possible and soon to be treeless (yay!! When our SBS Flexion arrives!!). We attempt dressage, never jump, fun rides and hope to attempt the odd endurance ride in the near future! We also play around with parelli.
Taz sounds lovely! I'm a big welsh cobby fan, previously owned 3!

Welcome to NR:)
I have a 15.1 welshie cob that I share with my daughter, though we currently have a tiny but very fast pony on loan so we can hack out together:)
Intermittently treeless and bitless and shod all round though;)

:) , perhaps if I yesll you will hear me :D . I know the road to glos well - my oldest daughter born in glos as we lived there many years ago ! samll world eh. ..... not far if you want come to the EMW big bash in August , lots great demos ( says she unashamedly plugging away  )
Only reason I can think JJ for planning to start a novice in a bit is if you were intending sell on perhaps ( I did this with Blodwyn - an EMW pony for rehoming as she would probably have found a home bitted..... but Abbey will prob be started bitless as we know who will be having her on loan). If the horse /mule /donkey doesn;t like the feel of the "head hug" that the dr cooks bb ( the only one I have long term experience of) can give then thats the only other reason at the mo I can think of to not use it on a novice. As you say - you will be able to make a fairly confident judgement of how your own equine will react to most situations if you have put in sufficient groundwork.
I cannot speak for all insurance companies but mine hads no issue with bitless bridles ( after all hackamores been around for many many years and the dr cooks bb is just a variation on a theme in theory !) It might be an issue with driving bitless - my insurance company is ok with it but some people who drive the usual way with a bit say their company will not insure them ......... best ask your present company is all I say :D
LOL Yann re the sharing - I got fed up of sharing Taz so we ended up having a 15.1 half shire come to stay so we could both ride at the same time ! Since daughter now into college and BF we now have a lovely sharer for Bonney and we have become good friends and hack out together.
oh yes and both "iron free" .....
