one of the big schoolhorses has been retired. not into the 'retired' herd, but into the normal school pony herd. he's out there 24/7, has already established himself as the new boss AND angel is his new girlfriend (but she still has her old bf as well ... the little tart ist 2-timing, ahem).

problem is .... this horse is very very dominant and pretty damn hard to shoo away! i get to the field, he'll be guarding the gate to start with. i proceed to chase him off (which involves all sorts of scary moves on my part ...). then i get angel. and he's back again, usually caprioling and prancing around us, again trying to stop me from getting angel to and out of the gate. again, i have to chase him off (he's pretty unfazed and i ended up almost rugbytackling him yesterday ...) and get angel out very quickly because he will try to get through the gate behind us!!!

oh and im not the only one having trouble with him either. yard staff have mentioned he is a pain in the neck with them as well.

shall i take a whip down next time??

here's the badboy ...

Ahhh, he looks so cute, how can he be bad! lol! :p

I know exectley where you are coming from and it is such a pain! I'm also sooo worried that I will let the other horse out and it will end up my fault! :(

I don't know about a whip, but if you have a 2nd lead rope, you could try twirling that in front of him, if he walks into it, then thats his fault!?!

this problem sounds so familiar to me. Ginger is in a herd with actually all others acting like your badboy.
Especially in the evening when they want to come in. They all hang out at the gate. Luckily there is a fence
all the way down to the barn and I just can let Ginger go out and close the gate before the horses run out.
But if there´s no current in the fence they just go through the closed gate...

Today I had a clash with a very dominant mare. I went out with hay to feed them and had an empty bag in the
other hand...when the horses saw the hay they gallopped to me and it is scary to have the herd around and
then they start fighting for the hay. So I waved with the empty bag to scare them away, but this mare
absolutely did not like it so she kicked at me  ... luckily without hitting me... :)

Try a short piece of hosepipe to tap him with.

he looks like butter wouldnt melt :D (and has the most velvety nose EVER!). but he is also on the large side (angels other bf is only 13.2 and a bit spooky so easily shooed away!), very dominant (he worked his way up the ranks in like 2 days!) and very much in love with angel (cant blame him for that, she IS fabulous!!).

flicking with leadrope did not have the desired effect (he is a weathered school horse and seems immune to this sort of thing ...) so i thought if i just swish a whip around (dont worry im not planning to wallop him with that!) he might take more notice of me!!

he's also got the habit of coming up behind you at full pelt ....

haha he really does look like a sweetie, I think you may be making things up about him Julia! ;) :D

Anyhow, I don't see why not try the whip, if all else has failed. We know you wouldn't hit him with it! Good luck! :D

well, in the photo he's by the gate, innocently checking out for any 'intruders' :D

I would put a whip in my boots. Then if you desperately get into a nasty crush you can pull it out and swish it about. Don't go over board with swishing though as you may find it will scare your pony off. ;)

Screech at him like a banshee and perhaps that will work :D , great fan of snarling and screeching when my cats do wrong hehe

hehe i HAVE tried the screeching/effingand blinding one :D

i'll stick a short whip in my boot today, just in case. unlikely that angel will get scared by it, she's normally pretty unfazed by thing like that.
