hi all :)

does anyone have any good tips on teaching a 10 month old foal to lead nicely please?

hes great without a lead rope! just follows behind me good as gold anywhere, but as soon as a lead rope is attached he chews it and pulls against it - either trying to charge off (he leads me!) or stops dead and pulls back!! :( I can get him to walk forward by walking in front and telling him to come here and he follows, but how do I teach him to lead properly?? :o

any tips or advice much appreciated!! :D

thankyou :)

Hi Kate!

If you have a look at http://www.harmony-project.net/skin.asp?user=katefarmer&tab=weblogs&fid=0&nextdate=6%2F7%2F2003+3%3A51%3A53+AM&direction=n&bflag=#march03 you'll find some exercises to help get this going.

The exercise starts off getting the forehand and hindquarters yielding, then moving the horse off around you. When these 3 elements are there, you can lead from wherever you like (either side, in front, by the shoulder - as you like) as you can control the speed and direction.

Good luck!
