Well - you learn about something every day.
Ive never met one before though.

I've always been fond of icelandics and really really want to ride one. Most probably because they were the first gaited horse I heard of... and they are so unbelievably cute!

I adore them too, just my kind of small fluffy pony! (horse!) They have updated their sales list here
http://www.oakfield-icelandics.co.uk/forsaleindex.htm
So many that I would like to take home! Really must find out if there are any near me to try the gaits. Dont think the farm would be much good for one though as its very midgy. :( Besides, still waiting for Wally to send me Kvikur as an early birthday pressie! :D :p

Sorry Perdita, Kvikur is far, far to valuable to let go! He stays! :o :o
Assa is Sćla mum, Sable's horse!
If you have a British bred Icelandic they have much less of a sweet itch problem.

I know, but I'll keep trying, lol :D Assa is gorgeous, would worry me that her ridden carrer has been short due to being a broody though, for me anyway. She is a lovely colour! Sable will be on next saying she has bought her to keep it in the family! :D

Much as I'd love her wont be doing that and anyway have spoken to Nick at Oakfield and he thinks she has finally found a lovely home :) I have seen her and she really is beautiful must be where Sćla gets her good looks.

Ljóssie is about 13.2hh and Fákur is a chunky 14hh at apush. He's about as big as they get. (inspite of what some dealers might tell you ;) ;) ) Then we have all shapes and sizes between.
They are good to carry 18 stone. Fákur wouldn't blink at that. Ljóssie woudl carry that if they were a rider used to Icelandics.
Ugla came from the same place in Iceland as Assa. She was 10 when we bought her, never been ridden. She is now one of our best horses for teaching folk lateral work. They are not like ordinary horses. They adapt to anything.
They really do have different ways of thinking to ordinary horses.

Wonderful, wonderful ponies. They have a very special sort of spirit. I am feeling very, very tempted.
Just disappointed, however, that there seems to be absolutely no mention at all of prices on the Oakfield site.
Would be interested to know the sort of range these ponies command if anyone could fill me in.

Think you should be looking at Ł3000 + depending age and training :)
P.S. Sorry but any excuse for a photo

my mare is 14hh.
the two boys she lives with are both 142cm.
My mates stallion was 145cm(sadly he died last weekend at the tender age of 7 brillaint horse he was)
and another friend has a horse that looks more like an Agiedienburger (sp?)(Icelandic x Paso) and has the wacking height of 147cm.
The breed is getting bigger.

We have a lot of them here in Finland. I rode one just few weeks ago and it was as wonderful as I had remembered.
I belive they can get as high as 150 cm, but I guess that is quite rare. (Found one: Hrafnketill frá Sauđárkróki, born 1976, Iceland)
In Finland at least, they are more expencive than "normal" breeds. Even riding them is more expencive than in a "normal" stable. But they are worth the money (not too often, though, couldn't afford it..)

Soooo adorable and fluffy!! Do they stay like that all year round?? I would love a little fuzzball like that! :p
Wally
4th Jun 2005, 10:42 PM
No, they do not stay furry all year, in summer they have coat finer than any Arab.
Don't be fooled, fuzz balls they might look, under the fuzz beats a heart and mettle of any Iberian. Many folk have been fooled by the cute fuzzball looks.

I've always liked the look of Icelandics and Im not a pony person, unless its Welsh or RP's to show.
But had always been put off by their height, feeling like I would sqaush one at nearly 15st, never realised that they could carry 18st :)

My icelandic horse is about 135 cm (or 14 hands) and seems happy to carry everyone from Husband (mostly walking) 14 stone to 10 year old (mostly fast tolt or canter). The only problem is I am frequently stopped to be told my pony is lame ! He is very unflappable and has a part time job escorting young racehorses, it gets them walking well trying to keep up.

Were you at the horse of the year show last October then Wally?

Nope, I never got there, they were the top class competition horses they used for the display. Quite a few were stallions.
All I have is run of the mill riding Icelandics that most folk can ride. Some of the competition horses are just too highly strung and fast for learners to ride. Ljóssie could have made the grade, but he'd hate the travelling and going places which goes with competition. So I just keep him at home and enjoy him.

I too fell in love with the Icelandic breed after a wonderful ride a the Pentland Hills Icelandic Centre. :) They are such fun and so sure footed, I have since had quite a few rides and my ambition is to own one. :) I have three horses at the moment so I don't think I can possibly get one just yet!!
Maybe when I am too old and sore to get up on the bigger horses??

Any chance you can post some photos of yours then as I was really impressed with them at Horse of the Year show?

Assa is Sćla mum, Sable's horse!
This is so strange  I got sent a link to this forum for some information on saddles and find people talking about my girl :)
Sable, can I get in touch when I am more awake. I would love to find out more about Assa's family.

I fell in love with them after riding Ardis from Oakfield Icelandics. Was probably the most fun I've ever had and it was raining very hard. I considered getting one for a very long time (and do occasionally still find myself on the sales page  ) but the fact that at regular horse shows they can't really compete (judges asking if its lame etc) put me off due to wanting to do showing. :(

There is no similarity between the Icelandic and the Fjord, apart from them both being soppy! :D
So you have Assa, Sable has Sćla, mother and daughter, and we have Winnie the Poo Assa's grand daughter, Sćla's daughter!
I looked as Assa a long time ago, but bought Sćla instead! After training her I found she was not happy doing the job she was required to do so Sable has her now.
Winnie the Poo, Assa'a grand daughter is a funny little thing, 3 years old and a bit of a baggage. ;) ;) :D

Any chance of a picture of Winnie the Poo, Wally.
I cant believe that just by joining a forum I have found Assa's daughter and grand daughter. :) Dont suppose anyone on here knows where her other foal ended up? I was told that she had had two foals.
Sable
20th Jun 2005, 08:40 AM
Her foals are :-
Sćla from Mountblairy 1995 (black mare) who belongs to me but did belong to Wally :D
Silfri from Mountblairy 1997 (a grey gelding)
Prins from Mountblairy 1998 (black)
They all had the same father Svađilfari from Three Oaks
Meanings of their names are:-
Svađilfari: magical horse of a giant
Assa: eagle, grey horse
Sćla: blessed
Silfri: silver plated
Prins: prince
Hope you are enjoying Assa she is beautiful, have seen her several times. :D :D :D

Fat Nott is a dear, sweet uncomplicated Icelandic. So easy, so kind. has no strong opinions about anything. She was a pleasure to have on the premises.
