i went out on a hack yesterday with my little cousin on fern. my cousin had a bad fall when fern decided to run all the way home a few weeks ago - so this was the first time she was brave enough to ride out with me again since.
i had actually persuaded her to have a slow canter which i was quite proud about!!!
then a load of motocross bikes came out of nowhere and started doing wheelies! staright towards us!
i think fern bolted first and then happy, who overtook and we were thundering up this track when i realised fern was right beside me with no rider!
happy then spooked at something and i flew over her head, did a flip and landed on my feet (ta **!)
when jordi caught me up she told me fern had taken a shortcut over a HEDGE! and shes only 11hh! thats why she fell off
i think i may have trouble persuading her to ride again!
ps - it was the motorbikes fault for not slowing down!

My son whos in the army in the Kings Troop exercises horses daily around London and the parks. He rides one and leads one, an idiot on a motorbike decided it would be fun to rev up his bike as he was passing Peter and make a rude guesture to try and scare the horses. Horses didnt flinch, but Peter got annoyed and took his foot and kicked the guy off his bike as he was passing. My son has got into trouble for this and extra workload. The guy on the bike got off scot free.
Doesnt seem very fair does it..

God, some people are so inconsiderate! Where I live, it's the tractors who are like that. They speed past, completely oblivious to the fact that you're cantering away from them on the wrong side of the road!
PS. 'd.a' was blanked because it blanks words that are commonly ued in text speak... 'd.a' is often used for 'the'

Are we talking motorcyclists or scramble bikes here?
On road I find the motorcyclists usually are very considerate although the first time I took Amber out on the lead rope I had just left a friends house and was walking back home up the lane when I heard this very loud roaring motorbyke.I kept saying to myself "He must've seen Amber he'll slow down" but he just kept on and shot passed.Amber was concerned but bless her, behaved perfectly for a two year old and just scrambled up the bank into the hedge. It was me who lost my nerve,I have never taken her out since and that was six years ago!

motorcyclists are normally fine with horses/riders as they're a minority on the road too and know how we feel. Scramblers/motocross on the other hand are another matter, we often have trouble with them in the fields where I walk the dog - they don't seem to realise how much nuisance/trouble they cause.
Hope you're all ok, well done for landing on your feet, v impressive.

i have found motorbikes to be ok. once i was going to a PC rally and a whole group of motor bikes appeared at the back of the trailer. the slowed right down and made as little noise as possible when overtaking us. they all waved aswell! these twits on quadbikes are a different matter. we had problems with them at our old yard. the owners grandkids had a quadbike or scramble bike each and used to tear round the place terrifying my lamanitic (they scared her so much she came down with another attack of laminitis) and one of them roared past me whilst out hacking. fortunately toby was too busy spooking at the scary bush to notice! i don't suggest you do this but once when leaving the yard they were blocking my way out so i drove at them foot flat to the floor, they kept out of my way after that!

motcross! that conjures up many delightful memories ... NOT. when i was younger I loaned a horse. there was no school to ride in but fantastic hacking (rural germany = go wherever you like = great!) .... all fine and dandy if it wasnt for those pesky local kids and their scary mopeds (made to look and sound like the motocross variety ...). they chase after riders, circle round horses ... extremely terrifying stuff!! luckily the horse i loaned didnt bat an eyelid (in fact she never batted an eyelid at ANYTHING. ever.) so the kids gave up in the end

I'm pleased to say that most of the motorbikes round here are very considerate. Even the old yard I was on when riding Coper (now owned by Jennj) we had a group of motorcylcists who used to use one of the fields for riding round an as we had to pass them most of them used to stop till the horses were safely out of sight. I remember one lot waiting till Copz disappered from view. Good job too as he hated them.

Yep I had a cyclist who kept ringing his bell behind Rhi. She kept shooting forward so I asked him to stop. He took no notice so I started to shout at him. Told us we should not be riding there so K told him we were allowed and if he had said anything more I think someone would have had to hold me backas I was ready to dismount and deck him  (me the one who is so quiet by nature)

I was told motorbikers are generally nice because a horse is a big threat to them... Much like a car.
Never met a biker out, but have met a group of people on the thin bikes with engines... Dunno what they're called - Were lovely, got off their bikes and walked straight past slowly, said hello and went on their way again. They waited until we were out of sight before they got on or started them up again.

Last year I was on holiday with Northumbria Horse Holidays in Allendale. We were enjoying a lovely offroad ride on misty morning when the sound of trail bikes started to get closer and the horses all got a little twitchy.
have to say, as soon as they spotted us, the guy who seemed to be "in charge" stopped all the others. As we went past they waved and we said thanks - and the guy said "we always give way to the original off-road vehicle"
Thought that was really nice. However this seemed to be an organised club with mature members. I have had a couple of quite scary experiences where you get 10 teenagers hooleying about on a quad bike with a knackered exhause on the beach!

I often see the military riding out (or leading horses) in London early morning - a lovely sight. Their horses are so well behaved - if I am behind, they will often wave me past and I go by at tick over. I won't be doing a stage 1 Harley conversion (a tune up involving a louder exhaust) because I sometimes take the bike to my stable and I don't want to frighten the horses!A few idiots give us all a bad name (and that's from a former 1%er).

I've mainly found motorbikes to be ok on the road. It's mainly the cars that are bad.

I am a bit worried now as not just 5 minutes ago I was at the entrance to my drive and saw a small car speeding past folowed by a motorcross bike - it looked like they were racing each other.
I live in a quiet village, in the 30mph zone and on a bend.
The thing is, I should collect my new hacking horsey this weekend - only, he doesn't apparently like bikes coming up fast behind him! I don't know what reaction he has to them but I am worrying now (any excuse). I was just plucking up the courage to go on a hack after years and years. :(

Sorry to hear that you had bother with some kids on bikes! I have a motorbike and me and all my friends always give way to horses. sometimes we hold bike rallys on land where horses are kept and always make sure we tidy up after ourselves really well.
From the other side, i also have 2 horses and find that bikers are usually very considerate when passing us, much more so than car drivers.I think that kids on scrambler bikes are usually less so if they are not supervised. But i think that this is a reflection of the general attitude of many (not all) kids these days.
