I once had this fetish with plain oatmeal (you couldn't tear me away from it), but now that I'm sick of it, we're left with millions (:) ) of boxes of it! Anyways, is it okay to give packaged oats, for human eating, to horses as a treat, or do they put something in it that has bad effects? Like after a ride, instead of carrots, a handful of oats! Side effects, any.......
Thanks,
Maci :)

i was always told that they made a horse 'fizzy' and highly strung tho' they used them at a riding school i once went to, to liven the older horses up...

i remember why now - they're packed full of energy and that's why you get scatty horses as a result! :)

We used to give oatmeal gruel to horses after a long hard day hunting. They loved it. It never did ours any harm.

I wouldn't have thought a handful as a treat would be enough to make a horse fizzy.
Maci, do you make porridge with it, and do you eat your porridge with salt or sugar?

Fizzy, you say.......he could sure do with an energy boost, that's for sure! :p He gets grain, which is suppose to "liven him up" also, but I don't think it does. Well, if no harm comes, oats (sometimes) for a snack it is!
LindaAd- If porridge to you is oatmeal to me (if they mean the same), I sometimes eat it with sugar, or they have the flavoured kinds (cinnamin, apple, dried fruit, etc.)! Mmmm!
Thanks!

I think it's the same, Maci: you cook the oatmeal til it's mushy and then you eat it with a spoon....some people put milk and sugar on it, but I like it the Scottish way with salt. For breakfast in winter.
I should think the horses would love the apple and cinnamon flavoured kinds!

Moss' treat after a wet Dartmoor Drift, or if it's very wet and cold in winter they both get it, is a feed moistened with warm water and good honey. They love it!

I have my answer, and a handful of oats before tonight's ride, it IS!
