The one before was just sore, no biggie. Anyone know if it will be a problem to ride tomorrow after a nasty back fall? I neeeeeed to ride or i'll diiiieee. Just dont wanna do my back in. Help!!

i landed on a jump once onmy back and it was painful to ride afterwards..especially doing rising trot..it sort of made my back 'judder' and was painful.i dunno about the next day with riding because i didnt go..all i know is it hurt...im sure it will be painful but if you just go for an easy ride you may be ok...otherwise go soak in nice warm bath :)

you could try getting in the saddle and see how it goes. If you cant ride, you can still spend time around the horses...

I am the queen of falls at my stable! Last summer, I did quite a major one- had a refusal, went flying, hit the jump, scraped my back along the jump cup, and landed on the standard supports(which are 4x4 peices of very hard board!). My back was bleeding form the cut I got on the cup, and I ended up with a ten inch long scar. Also, my lower back was swollena and incredibly painful for months afterwards! But, I got up and got back on and did the jump and finished my lesson. And I went to work the next day- at a stable where I had to ride and lift stuff and evrything. i didn't miss a lesson, even though it really hurt.

I am not saying this to brag or seem like Superwoman b/c I know that there are many people on this board who have had bad falls-probably worse than mine- and kept going. I am just saying that I have never let a fall stop me. And I have had quite a few recently! It is very painful, but I am a very stubborn person.

And although that's a good thing, it can also be a bad thing. My back tends to hurt alot more now, especially in that one spot. And I will be going to the doctor's pretty soon to get it checked out- my boyfriend is making me :p. I would suggest that if it hurts, and maybe even if it doesn't, go get it checked. And also, about riding, I would just do a couple jumps to prove to yourself that you can do it, including the one you had a refusal at, then stick to the flat. But that's only if you feel ok. Don't push yourself. Of course, I say this, but do you think I follow my own advice? :D Still, you don't want to hurt yourself again.

Even if you're a bit sore, it shouldn't be a problem. Signs that you need to get a back injury checked out are pain so bad you can't face moving, pain/numbness/tingling going down your legs/arms(if this is happening when you're still on the ground don't get up or move - you need to get a spinal injury ruled out at hospital, and need a paramedic to transport you! If it develops later eg the next day it is more likely to be due to nerve irritation eg a disc problem or something similar irritating the nerve - this is sciatica if it affects the leg). Also if you have low back pain and have problems peeing.

These are fortunately fairly unusual after riding falls, and generally you'll just be a little achey after 1-2 hours, and wake up feeling like you've been wrestling alligators the next day! Regular painkillers (paracetamol and ibuprofen are good and can be taken together -allergies permitting, and asthmatics shouldn't have ibuprofen), warm baths, and remaining mobile eg walking around and going swimming are good.

As far as riding goes, take it easy, consider some paracetamol before you start, gentle stretches to warm up before getting on and cool down afterwards - maybe even exercises on the horse so you can warm up and cool down together while restoring your confidence!
If you've been really stiff, a shorter ride than normal may mean you can walk the next day without an anaesthetic!!

Hope this helps, and remember if in doubt, see your doctor!

I fell off 4 times in one lesson, mainly over the same fence. Sore, very bruised ego, was going to give up horses, tearful. It gets better. Still cry if I fall off - even if it doesn't hurt!

Thanx guys but no matter what advice u gave me my Dad just told me im not going riding today. Of course when i asked why he just yelled and told me not to argue with him Im not allowed 2 go till Saturday. I wanna scream. I got up after I fell and did the jump again fine. It was painful but my back doesnt hurt anymore. My dad just likes playing doctor however so... I think i am going to scream.

Your dad just cares about you!!! Alot of parents don't even care about their kids, so be grateful yours do. I mean, how far away is Saturday? He's not asking you to quit forever! Jsut for a few days to make sure that you are ok.

Don't worry, the horses will still be there when you go back! :)

Parents are a pain in the backside, I know, I'm one myself, lol. Its 'cos he loves you. Thankfully my Amy is only 2 at the moment she only falls over her own feet, I expect I'll be just like your Dad in years to come.

I bet Saturday feels like a lifetime away. It'll be here before you know it.

Have fun
