horses can colic off hay.
both of my boys have. Autumn coliced not long after i got him because when we ran out of hay (not the greatest quality, kind of cource) and the hay we picked up was VERY find and VERY green and although he loved it his system couldn't handle the switch of hay and he coliced.

Tahoe had a slight colic just a couple weeks ago he got out and went to the neighbors and decide to eat some hay thats been sitting outside all winter, needless to say it obviously wasn't great hay and he coliced.

a change of hay (quality) can cause colic and so can moldy or dusty hay. and its not directly the hay, but sand colic can come from feeding hay on the ground.

I would imagine its true as colic is caused through many different things and if a horse has bad teeth and isnt chewing its food properly then I would think that it would be physically possible. Having said that though I used to have a mare that colicked and the vet told me to up her hay as it would help to prevent it.

I think hay (fibre) help keep impaction colics clear whilst spasmodic colic can be caused by any change in the diet, even tpye/quality of hay.

Colic is basically just a stomach ache, so yes - If the hay isn't good quality, then a horse could colic off of it, as they can colic off of too cold water (Anyone seen Black Beauty? :P)
