Please, a very basic guide to adding an avatar needed! I have tried to do this through the User CP section, and do a browse, find the picture I want which is saved on my desktop, and try to attach it. However, it's constantly too big to go on. I have cropped the picture down to pin head size, but still too big! What am I doing wrong? It's the first time I've tried anything like this. Basic answers please!

All the cropping does is make it smaller to look at - not actually reducing the size on the computer (if that makes sense).
To actually make it smaller you need to adjust the pixels, but you need someone brainier on here to tell us how to do that!

If you post the original on here, I'll have a play aout with it and see what I can do. I would just tell you how to correct it, but it could be one of any number of issues. Just check though, is it a .JPG file and what program are you using to change it? Something fancy like Photoshop would give a big file size, however small the photo is

Hi Kyanya,
Thanks for the offer, but now I've hit another problem. When I try to send it as an attachment, it's still too big. I can only get it down to 189 kb, and it needs to be 50. It's a Jpeg file, I saved it with the Kodak easyshare software onto my hard drive, and don't think it's anything to do with Photoshop or anything fancy :D
Sorry for being so technologically backwards!!

If you have Photoshop:
Help
>resize image
>Online
>Height/width (set to below the max size (I think 50pixels for avatars))
Save As
>ImageOptions - Quality Low or medium, depending on the original size of the image.
For Paint:
Image
>Stretch and Skew
>Ensure you do this in even percentages!! (height & width) Or you will end up witha Wonky Donkey instead of a Pretty Pony!!
*check the size in Pixels by: (don't change anything here, or it will crop your photo)
Image
>Attributes
Unfortunately, you have to save the image to check the file size, so save copies (pretty_pony1.1, Pretty_pony1.2 etc) and don't save over the original!!
If you want you can PM me, I'll give you my email address, and then I can post it for you. But only in the next couple hours 'cause I'll be going to bed & won't be on a computer with Photoshop for the next 2 weeks.
