:(
Well, I've sprained my ankle doing stable work! I've never sprained, strained, or broke anything in my entire life. And just when I was making huge improvements in my riding! Is this a sign that I'm getting less young? :)

I'm just concerned about when I'll be back to 100% so that I can ride.

Ouch! Can sympathise - the other day I was on my way to the stable when I skidded in the mud and landed on the cobbles... got away with a massive bruise and luckily nobody saw it happen. Amazing how easy it is to injure yourself without even going near a horse, isn't it! Hope your ankle recovers soon.

I have sprained my ankles badly before (playing Soccer/Football years ago.) It can take a good two weeks where you will be limping around. I don't know if you are on crutches too. You are probably already icing it and keeping it wrapped to bring down the swelling and support it. Once it starts looking more normal again (no longer bruised or swollen), it will be weak for a long time and you don't want to push it or else you will keep hurting it again. When you do get back to riding, I would suggest some kind of wrap or brace to support it until it gets very strong again. You will know what to do because you will feel it. Sprained ankles hurt!! Oww. Take care of it.

Maybe you can ride without stirrups if you are desparate to get back, but be careful on the dismount part.

Thanks everyone! Your kind words have cheered me up more than you know!! :)

I'll be sure to take it easy for a while (as much as it may drive me up the wall), so that I don't risk re-injury.

Thanks again! :)

Hi Claudia ...

Lots of sympathy ... and I hope you get better really soon ...

I once slipped on ice on a bitterly cold day in Winter, wheeling an enormous pile of dung to the much heap. I fell straight down onto my coccyx, and couldn't move or speak the pain was so intense.

No-one took any notice,(g) and I just gritted my teeth, got up, finished the job, salted the path where I'd slipped, mucked out one stable, then had to go home, where I promptly passed out! I was out of action for a good few weeks and it drove me to distraction.

Anyway, the point is, be kind to yourself, don't rush it, and you'll soon be back in the saddle ..

Good Luck!

Anne

Claudia

Sorry to hear about your ankle - get better soon! I've never hurt myself whilst riding my two BUT............I've fell in the stable several times (slippery wet floor) fell off my bike whilst on the way to the stables twice last winter (icy roads) and managed to tear my ligaments (three weeks in plaster hip to ankle) whilst leading a shetland pony down the lane!!! I think we are all safety concious when it comes to riding but we seem to forget that an awful lot of accidents can happen when not actually on horseback! I now wear my riding hat when biking down to the stables (I know I must look like a right wally!!) as there is more chance of me falling off my bike than from my exceedingly quiet ponies!

Hope it won't be too long before you are back in the saddle! Take care.

Hi Claudia,

I know how you feel. I've just got back to riding after a longish break and was really looking forward to my riding lesson this week. Then the dog pulled me over and I landed on my ribs which is really painful so I've had to cancel.Grrr.

ohhh, claudia! lots and lots of sympathies... i've sprained my ankle a couple of times, actually, so i know how you feel. don't worry, though... i'm sure you'll be back up to speed pretty quickly; just make sure to take care of yourself.

and hey, at least you're not my mom, who once slipped on the ice outside our barn when i was younger... she was feeling a bit too confident, carrying a huge bag of shavings over slippery ground (silly mom), and ended up fracturing her leg in several places! she had to have surgery to repair the damage, and even now has steel pins in her lower leg... like Myrmex said, it's amazing what damage we can do to ourselves *outside* the barn, and off the horse! ;)

anyhoo, take care, hon! :)
