Hey there!

Want to get Foxy's summer kit sorted ASAP - he's got the lighgtweight rug for rainy days, but I need hot day wear!

He cant wear a headcollar in the field - he could get caught up on thin air, don't particullarly have time to have to free him every day, so what good fly nets are there for in the field? Also, what fly sprays do you reccomend?

Dolly wears a Shires Fly Mask. It fits nicely, doesn't rub, and if she gets caught, it just slides off :)

i got merlin a rambo flybuster original that comes with its own face mask, merlin will wear this in his stable this summer. i like the mask becase it covers the ears and has a fluffy lining and is fastened with velcro so could come off if he got in trouble. :)

all i an say on fly sprays is that i dont recommend naf off as i found it actually attracts the flies

Foxy doesn't need a fly sheet, he doesn't scratch/have sweet itch in any form. I'm asking about the fly sprays to keep the flies off him. Are there any other masks out there?

I use the Equilibrium field relief fly mask on my TB. It covers the complete face and has a detachable and adjustable nose section for a perfect fit.

I think they cost around £28.00 now (not sure about this because I bought mine about 3 years ago).

Vinegar! It works wonders, flys hate it. Just put in in an old spray bottle and away you go

IV Horse make a good fly repellent, and if the flies get very bad Hydrophane do a great repellent which comes in a screw top tin, but cannot be applied to sensitive areas such as the face. i've had problems with Barrier Hygiene fly repellents causing allergic reactions so would be cautious of them.

as for fly masks, i think the field safe fringes are best, mine find the masks claustrophobic.

I use the Cashel fly mask, covers the whole face and the ears (think it may be the same one Jacquie uses). Also you can get a 'fieldsafe' headcoller. It has rubber rings that snap if its gets caught and they are easily repaired with superglue.

Safi has a Cashel mask too - it's on it's third summer now and the only thing wrong has been a bit of the lining coming loose - 5 minute sewing job put it right - I would highly recommend it.

Can't remember the name of the fly repellant but it had a yellow label with blue writing...American I think???? But anyway, very good!

Just mix 1/4 gallon Vinegar, 1/4 gallon dishwashing liquid, 1 gallon water.
The vinegar is what keeps them away. The dish washing liquid is what makes it stick to the horse.
Just spray away.

This recipe works well (better than some of the expensive fly repellents on the market!!!)

15ml citronella
1tsp washing up liquid
4tbsp vinegar
2tbsp methylated spirits
1 mug of strong tea

Mix together in a jug and top up to 2 litres with cold water.

Always shake before use because the citronella oil sits on the top of the mixture and will burn the pony’s skin if applied at full strength.

I also use a Shires full face fly mask, well my horse does!

Has the full bit over the nose so protects his nose from sunburn and in the very hot weather we are currently enjoying, his nose has remained nice and pink :D !

It also was very reasonable at £15.

He has managed to catch it in a tree, but it just slipped off his head without any trouble, still caught in the tree when we recovered it.
