I just discovered this forum. I rode horses growing up in Germany (and living in England for a short time). I always took lessons though and never had my own horse. I quit when I got married and took an 18 year break due to finances and pregnancies. Now I am 35, living in California with my husband and 6 kids. I have started riding again last summer and can't believe I lived that long without horses. My husband and the kids also have started riding. Starting next Monday, we are leasing a horse for the first time. She is a sweetie and my husband and I have both rode her and helped take care of her with no problems. She is very calm and "bombproof", as my instructor calls it. The lady I am leasing from is on site and willing to answer any questions. Still I am nervous about riding and caring for her without anyone there to back me up. It's silly, I know. Anyone had similar feelings and can offer me advice?

Don't worry I use to be like that! With my first pony camp pony (1 week owning a pony) I had a gentle 14.3hh pony called Darkie! When I went into the stable to groom him I was soooo scared! Then realised that firstly he was more interested in food than trying to kill me! :D And second he knew I was scared and didn't mean any harm! If your pony is bombproof he is really safe! Like darkie he will give you confident! Don't worry once you get to know him and spent some quality time together you'll be fine! My opinion is to groom your horse! It will help to get at ease with him and you and him will get to know him better!
