Can anyone recommend one? I think it would do me a lot of good to be able to watch how 'proper' riders do it! ;)

Thanks

Jo

Let's see what we got...

Centered Riding- it's good but not one of my favorites
The Visible Rider- that one is interesting (the rider wears a bone suit so you see what happens inside the body)
A Matter of Trust- Dressage with Walter Zettl (I like :) )
Lateral movements- Mary Waneless (I need to get more of her stuff. She seems to be very good)

Seabiscuit- you will of course learn no riding skills from this one but watch it anyway because it is so good! :D

Many thanks Karin :) I'll do a search for a couple of these and see if I can find them.

A friend lent me The Classical Seat by Sylvia Loch, it was quite informative.

Personally my favourites are the Lloyds Bank Pony Club Teaching Series videos. If you can ignore the fact that they are set at the Beaufort Pony Club camp in the eighties, the advice and teaching is really good. They are also fantastic value for money - the first two only cost £10 ish each. I bought them when I had been riding for about 6 months (as an adult) and keep coming back to them three years later. I like them because they are not 'perfect' riders showing how it is done but are real (albeit young) riders. If you're interested I'll try and track them down for you online.

I don't have the first one but video 2 lasts 93 minutes and covers the basic paces, the correct way of going, impulsion, rhythm, tempo, the outline, applying all this to a dressage test, basic jumping, exercises on the flat for jumping, riding a correct approach, jumping a course and a little on preparing for an ODE.

Video 3 lasts 90 minutes and covers; lessons on a young horse, extension and collection, the halt, rein back, turn on the forehand, leg yield, shoulder in, half pass, half piroiette, trotting poles, gymnastic jumping.

There is also 'The More Experienced Rider' which focusses on the different elements of a one day event but is also excellent and well worth having. This one follows two young riders at the Gleneagles Centre in Scotland and rather less pony clubby than the other two.

If you want videos of 'proper' riders I'd recommend the 'An evening with...' series particularly 'An evening with Carl Hester'. Hope this helps :)

Hi Casper - sorry, I didn't say exactly what I wanted to learn about, sorry! :) I'm not sure to be honest - I've gone back to riding after 20 odd years, and just really want to focus on general riding techniques to see where I might be going wrong and to pick up tips. A bit of everything I reckon :)

Em 1 - That series sounds quite good, I'll have a search for it and see what I can come up with. Thanks :)

hallv - Thanks! Another one to have a look at too. I'm gonna sit down later on when the kids are in bed and have a good old rummage around the internet and compare all these that have been suggested!

Thanks everyone, much appreciated :)

I think Riding in your Mind's Eye by Jane Savoie is good. She goes over W/T/C and transitions up and down from each gait. The same sequence repeats a few times in a row with a little slow motion also so you are supposed to be able to visualize the movements and then think about them while you're riding. (of course it would help you if you were riding a $30,000 horse too - hehe)

I've had a brief search on the net and his site has the videos I was talking about

https://secure4.easyspace.com/www.bramic.co.uk/acatalog/My_Online_Shop_Young_Riders__20.html

There also look to be some good videos around the rest of the site.

has got the Sylvia Loch and Jane Savoie videos on but the descriptions aren't really informative! I also like Sylvia Loch but wouldn't recommend them as general videos. They are really good for specifics but not 'sit down with a glass of wine after a long day and watch horses' type :D Depends what you want I suppose but I like both ....

.....off now to put on videos and enjoy a glass of wine ;) !

Thankyou Em, I really appreciate you hunting down that link. I think I'll order that series, it will also appeal to my son.

I think I'll pass on the wine and videos... a glass of wine after a hectic day with 3 kids on their easter holidays will just send me straight to sleep! ;) But enjoy yours :)

This may not be very helpful, but my all-time favourite horse video is a German one just called 'Pas de Deux'.

It is a 20-min demonstration by Dr.Reiner Klimke riding Ahlerich and Anne-Grethe Jensen riding Marzog in a farewell appearance some years ago. It is quite simply so beautiful to watch that I have been known to reach for the kleenex ...

Maybe you could find a copy on eBay or something, but I really would recommend it without reservation to anyone who loves beautiful riding. Never in my wildest dreams am I going to be able to ride like that, but it is just so inspiring to see it done!

I have a video called "School of Horsemanship" that was filmed at the von Neindorf school in Germany. Beautiful, beautiful riding!!!

For position, I like the video by Suzanne von Dietz (can't recall the name right now, but there is also a book) plus the seat video by Kyra Kyrklund and one called "Thirty Days to a Better Seat" with Karl Mikolka (unfortunately that one is out of print).

Do you have any way of getting the RFD-TV channel? LOTS of horse shows there, anything from how-tos to demonstrations to competitions (dressage, western, etc). It's wonderful!

It's available in the US on satellite. Does anyone know if that channel is available outside the US?
