Hi everyone,
First post in the starting out forum, so be gentle with me please! ;)
I've got my first lesson (not ridden for about 20 years!) tomorrow
I'm really looking forward to it (apart from the sore bum!) now assuming all goes well and I want to carry on; can someone recommend some jodhpurs for those of us who are vertically challenged (and somewhat wider that 20 years ago :o )
I'm just 5' 2" currently size 14 (Uggg :( ) with very short legs about 27" inside leg. My biggest problem is I have thighs that a rugby player would be proud of  so I need something with some give in it....
....Jeeeze, with that description of myself you're probably wondering if I should really be trying to get on a poor horse!!!
Anyway, now I have humiliated myself; any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to spend loads of money on gear because I'll need it for the lessons, so I thought I would try ebay to begin with.
Thanks for reading!
Take care
Justie

You shouldn't have much of a problem at size 14 and most 'regular' length jods should be short enough. You can turn them up to lose an inch or two as well.
I have the same inside leg measurment as you and if I can't get a short enough jodhpur I go for breeches. I think these are designed to only go part way down the lower leg so they're not too bulky under long boots but they reach my ankles!
Pop into your local tack shop and try some on, they are all different. You may be best measuring your waist first though as this is how they are sold rather than the usual size 14 etc

Hey im a size 14! :p But i am 5ft 7". I find all horsey shops sell jods to fit. I prefere the darker colours though as they hide a few of the bumps :D
Good luck on your lessons and enjoy yourself :D

Make sure you try on ALL the jods you pick up before purchasing any pairs. If one brand isn't fitting you, try a different brand - they are not all created equal. I like Devon Aire breeches and jods because they fit petite people (short as well as small girthed) and they have a variety of colors, shapes and a multitude ot sizes. But as has been said - most tack shops will have exactly what you're looking for.

Hey don't worry if they feel tight the first time you try them on. After a few riding sessons they should loosen up a bit. I wore my new ones around the house (along with my rather stiff new leather half-chaps) for a day and everything loosened a bit and I was pretty comfortable for my first ride. I didn't manage to find jods with my size (guy at the shop said it was sold out) so I got half chaps and breeches which fit fine.

I bought some a few weeks back, first pair in decades, and just went down to my local tack shop and tried a load on. Different brands differ so much. Some came up really short, some tighter than others etc. And then the ones I eventually did choose, I brought home and put on to show hubby, and his comment was " Are you going horse riding or scuba diving cos they are so tight they'd be good in the sea!" Anyway, as StormChaser says, they do loosen up, and they're fine now :) (thank goodness!)
I've just ordered myself a new pair of cord ones on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7145175870&ssPageName=ADME:B:RECO:UK:2
If you're interested, I'll let you know how they come up, size wise, when they arrive. (I might have also bought myself a pair of riding boots too... but don't tell hubby!) ;) :D

Hi
I like the Equetech stretchy cord pull-on ones. They come in 4 different colours (black, navy, dark green and burgundy) and are so comfortable and easy to wash (and stretchy) that I rarely wear any of my others any more.
Failing that breeches are good because they're not meant to come down to your ankles and are smooth fitting inside long boots.

After intially pouring myself into the labelled 'right size', I read that more classical dressage instructors feel that modern jods/breeches are too tight, so much so that they restrict in flexible movement. So, I bought a pair a 'size too big'. I now have several pairs a size 'bigger' and I don't wear the others. They look better, feel better and I believe they do make a difference to my riding!
There is a woman on Ebay going by the name Justthejod, who does great jods and breeches at very reasonable prices. She often has good quality German ones for what we'd pay for fairly basic makes elsewhere. She is called Pippa, is very helpful with enquiries and I can vouch for the quality of her service as I've had several pairs from her :)
Have a good lesson :)

Thanks everyone!
I think I'll see how tomorrow goes and then get down to our nearest Saddlers and try a load on. Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll make a note of them and take the list with me.
Thanks again :)

Your riding boots secret is safe with me ;)
Please do let me know how the new jods fit, always good to know especially if I can get them cheaper on Ebay!
Thanks again for your help :)

totally agree with you ponylover88 that's why I have them too. The lycra makes them more forgiving than the cotton ones. I just wish they had some in bright funky colours or patterns. I have a real hankering for some mad ones, although realise they will probably make me resemble a baby elephant

Hiya!
I love the Gorringe new cord jods, they are really really stretchy and so comfortable. I've got a 31" inside leg and their regular leg length only came half way down my calf so would probably be fine for people with a 'normal' leg length!!
I get mine from Clee Saddlery for about £20 with no delivery charge.

Hi
I agree with Ponylover88 and Crazyhorse, I got my first pair of Phoenix jods last year after squeezing into Ride and Groom ones (a size bigger than I needed). They are a really comfortable fit and wear really well. I think I paid approximately £30 and they come in dark blue, black, burgundy, green, white and beige (I have the dark blue ones, more flattering).

:D :D Yes, I agree the Phoenix jods are good - I have the navy ones - quite flattering really !!! :D Another good fit are the Just Toggs? (think thats the name on them). I got them for Christmas, they're quite a generous cut. Think they were about £30. Anyway, happy jod hunting!

If you can't find a good fitting pair and you know how to use a sewing machine, consider making them. There is this company, Suitability, which sells only patterns for horse people : clothes, horse blankets, saddle covers, etc. Just a thought. :)
Congrats for returning to riding! Lots of us are returning to riding after taking some time off. I was away from it 10 yrs, from the time of graduating college till now.

I'm a 12/14 and got relatively short legs and love my newish Shires Saddlehuggers - would highly reccommend them.
I did buy a cheap pair from decathlon when I first started back riding and they were great and I managed to get into age 16 so they only cost my £9.99 which was a bonus - as I was very skint at the time. They washed and have lasted well but no where near as nice and soft as my new shires :)
