Okay, feel very silly and dumb asking this but can you ride on the same day that your horse is shod? I'm pressuming yes but my horse normally gets shod on a Thursday which is the day I can't make it to ride him so it's normally his day off, so now I'm confused.
He's getting shod this morning, probably already has been done, and I'm giving him a day off from ridden and just doing groundwork with him anyway, but I was just wondering.
Anyone enlighten me? thanks xxxx

Yes they can, we always do, as the farrier normally comes saturdays, so me and the kids always ride the same day, shouldnt cause a problem, if your horse does show some discomfort its probably the fact the farrier has not done something correctly as new shoes should not affect the horses ridden work that day.

really its best to leave your horse for a day or two because they tend to become a bit foot sore.
i always leave it for a good 24 hours :D
nut you know your horse best :)

A horse shouldnt become foot sore if the shoes have been fitted correctly! The farrier on our yard does everyone on a saturday and the majority of people ride the same day and no-one has had a problem, also i have been to riding schools/equine colleges/professional yards who all do the same, whats the point in having a 3 day eventer, or a Grade A showjumper if you have to leave it for 2 days with no work after?!?! some people cant afford to do this, if i left maddision for 2 days without no work, she would go crackers when i did work her. This is just my opinion and in the past i have never known anyone to have a problem, alot of people like me HAVE to ride their horse regulary, and like i said before if your horse does have a problem its likely to be something the farrier has done, like trimmed too much off, put the nail in wrongly by accident.
Its personal preferance really, if you want to leave your horse for 2 days after shoeing  do so.....but it wont do your horse any harm being ridden that same day.

im sorry but thats not true! any horse can become a bit foot sore.ive been told this by many a VERY experienced farrier even those who work for top horse riders and vet clinics.

it doesnt hurt these horses t have 24 hours off as they are at peak fitness and any way as i said:
they TEND to become a bit foot sore.
any way thats what I have been told but the decision is up to you chewitmonster as said ONLY YOU KNOW WHATS BEST FOR YOUR HORSE
hope ive helped but the best advice to get is from you farrier :D

Merlinz Gal, don't worry, I know that people have been getting 'tetchy' recently on some of the threads, but people can disagree with each without that :) Surely this is just a difference of opinion? :)
I have also always been given to understand (by a number of farriers) that a horse can be ridden straight after being shod!

Thanks for the replies! I was just going to do some groundwork in the school (rubber surface) today, do you reckon thats okay? I normally give him the day off because of my routine and he's not normally turned out again after so he tends to just be in his stable. I'm not sure what to do now! xxx

The farrier who used to shoe my old horse always said that she should ideally be given a day off after shoeing. However, I think that the majority of people would ride the same day.

Sorry but if your horse is footsore after being trimmed or shod, there's something wrong. It isn't a normal thing by any stretch of the imagination.
Any horse can become a bit footsore but there should be a reason why this is happening. If it's happening directly after a horse is shod or trimmed chances are the farrier is taking off more hoof than is necessary, most usually in the region of the sole.
As for giving a day off work, sometimes I did, sometimes I didn't. Even now my mare is barefoot I'll still ride after she's been trimmed if I want to, the whole point of trimming her is to improve her hooves, not make her uncomfortable.

I would agree with the majority here - if a horse is footsore after being shod then something is wrong - they should not be able to feel any difference - the horn is like your fingernails it has no feeling in it. I have always worked after shoeing and never had any issues :)

I tend to ride the same day, but wouldn't choose that day to do a long ride or more schooling than usual.
I'm not sure about being footsore but for a young horse (or old stiff horse) shoeing can be tiring, they have to hold their feet up for quite a long time so if they're not very supple it may be hard on them.

my horse generally gets the day off coz he gets grumpy when being shod (farrier doesn't let toby chew his hair so he grumps for the rest of the day!!). a horse shouldn't really be foot sore, but my mare can be sore for up to a week after being shod as coz of laminitis, her feet bruise easily, and she finds the whole shoeing process very tiring. its really down to personal choice in the end.

I ride my horse the same day, and there haven't been any issues. Most of the horses here also will be worked the same day. There is one horse that has huge issues when getting shod (he's a nightmare! ) so he won't be ridden until the next day, but no one else has had a problem.

Never ever given mine anytime off after being shod and not had any probs.
Except for B, but his shoeing and conformation is a little different and he does get a little tetchy after shoeing, but on a routine shoeing with no probs, no a horse shouldent go footsore.
If it does, something is wrong and it could be a case of Nail Binde or something, or there is something else wrong.
A good farrier with a good fitting shoe, shouldent cause any soreness whatsoever.

the 23 horse barn i work at in the summer has their horses shod during the week when they are having lessons and horses will be shod and then go right out in lessons. 5 years and approximatly 80 differant horses and we have never had a horse that couldn't go right out in lessons after being shod. it shouldn't be a problem.
edit: i just rememberd- after being barefoot all winter my farrier does advice us to give the horses a day off just to get re acclamaited to having shoes on so my guys get 24hrs off when they first get re-shod in the spring

I'm not to sure about this . The horses at my RS get shod on Mondays , and they all gave a day off , but thats because they've worked hard over the weekend . I don't think its got anything to do with the farrier though . And they sometimes get used on Mondays if something special s happening . For example , children from a childrens home came for a block of 6 lessons and these were done on a Monday . And the livery horses also get shod on Mondays and I think they get rode . Each horse is an individual though , so if you try to ride him and he seems uncomfortable , just leave it . Hope this helps . :)

When I was younger, our only blacksmith was a few miles away and we found it easier to ride there, have him re-shoe them and then ride home.
I have had a horse in the past that when I had a new blacksmith, he became very foot sore. When I took a closer look, you could see that he had trimmed them back too much.
A new blacksmith was found!!!
In general, I think it would be fine to ride the same day - if you prefer!!
All the best

In all my years with horses I have never heard of them needing time off after being shod.An exception may be for instance, the laminitic , but even that should be rare.

Wasn't it at this years Olympics that someones horse threw a shoe minutes before it was supposed to go into the show-jumping ring? They just stuck one on again and off he went :)
My yard rents out horses for hunts...
On the morning of a hunt all the horses get pulled out and shoes checked.
If they are loose or dodgy at all they get reshod etc... then they hunt for half the day :) no problems.
Couldn't have shoes coming off halfway through a hunt :p
