scary incident in the field today  went to get angel, she was quietly grazing with her new little buddy (lovely black cob mare who is also quite new at the yard). put headcollar on and proceeded to lead her towards the gate.
when, out of nowhere this enormous horse makes its way after us, steadily gaining momentum and speed. angel was petrified, panicked and tried to bolt off (i didnt let go off the rope though because i was worried shed trip over the leadrope and hurt herself ...). by the time we were close to the gate this horse was galopping after us  just about managed to shove angel through the gate and literally slammed it shut before the other horse could get out
i did manage to keep the other horse at a little distance by yelling and waving my arm about, but it was all very scary
spoke to my friend, she said this horse had been chasing angel and her little pal all over the place earlier ... no wonder angel was cr**ing herself!
what do i do if it happens again?? i dont know whose the other horse is, it looks quite young so i dont want to resort to drastic rope-flicking measures ...

I'd ask the YO who's horse it is, and ask the owner if they'd mind you chasing it off if it happens again :) I'd rather someone chased Dolly away if she was being agressive than let themselves and/or their horse be injured by her :)

Next time I would go out try and take a buddy and a crop. This way you can grab Angel and still be able to fend of this evil horse. I really dislike it when theres the horses like this. We have a few that tried to kick Jake when he was coming in and then another one followed us around the pasture and none of the horses get along with it and it was just no fun!

As funny as it sounds im pretty sure, if the evil horse is as evil as you say, you will prob loose the crop fight!!! :D :p
But why dont you talk to the owner and ask if the horse wouldnt be turned out with yours as it might kick and injure your horse. it sounds a bit drastic but a mare in season in my yard was turned out into a field with a mare in foal and the mare went absolutly haywire and kicked the s**t out of the mare in foal and another horse out there. The horse had a minor leg injury and the vet is coming to check on the mare in foal as she may have lost it :( :( :(

theres a little filly in there as well (she got excited by all the hustle and bustle but she is harmless. she likes to run up to people but not in a scary way and she knows when its time to move on).
thing is, angel is not an aggressive horse (having watched her in the field for hours on end), but she's not one to be bullied either (she WILL chase bullies off but hasnt hurt anyone since ive had her). maybe evil horse is the leader and is trying to put angel and her little friend into their places?
today was the first time this has happened. i did however notice that angel was a little nervy when i brought her in in the last couple of days (one time she raced up to me to get her out ... i put it down to the lack of grass in the field and that she knew there was food waiting in the stable), in a lets-trot-to-the-gate-quickly sort of way.
when i went to get her this horse was nowhere near her though, she just started running after us from seemingly nowhere
ill find out whose it is though and speak to other people there (see if they have problems and what they do about it)

Ohh sounds just like a horse im having trouble with at the momment.
Ive been given India for a week and have had such a fun few days so far apart from one thing.
A horse was given to YM to look after but it is very nervous though. It wouldnt go out its stable at all...they got it into a small field with just India once and this mare stood by the gate and wouldnt move. Soon she began to love India and has taken her on as her new mummy. (not to mention its bigger then India). Kitty and India now go out with all the other mares and Kitty follows India around like anything luckily on both occasions of getting India in my friends have been with me as this big araby thing paniced when my friend took India out and was squashing me to try and get out...then when India is out it gallopes and bucks and rear and charges all the others as it feels insequre without India.
Luckily I have permision to just make little movements with my hands in the air to get it away..I was told to just hit it with the rope but an insequre and very nervous horse what is that going to do to it? make it more scared.
I would say ask if you can just flick your leadrope gently in their direction so they dont get you...Im sure they would like it more as if the horse keeps doing this it maywell think its ok.
GOOD LUCK

they mystery is unravelling! have spoken to the owners. the horse has only been at the yard for a week and is quite young still. she's either trying to play with the rest of them or she's just a very dominant horse. by now this horse is covered in marks because most of the other horses dont seem to want to play her games  she's even been kicked by the little filly
now that i know what im dealing with, things should hopefully improve!
have another issue though. because there isnt much grass in the winterfield, a lot of horses are dead keen to get back into the stable in the evening (which they all do, but at different times). yesterday 3 horses were patrolling the gate in a very aggressive fashion, picking fights as they went along ... i ended up getting help to keep them at bay while i got angel out. angel was scareed of the other horses and bolted through the gate (i didnt let go though and she stopped the second she was outside) ... any advice??
