I am glad I found this board. I am learning a lot by browsing through some of the other post.

I am learning the technique of horsemanship at the age of 27. I am very lucky because I found someone that has volunteered her time and her horse to teach me some basics. It took us nearly a month to get together but when we finally did it was one of the most exciting evenings of my life. I spent about 3 hours with the horse and loved every second. We have plans to get together again and hopefully this time I will get to ride.

Now My question: She asked what I wanted to learn. To be honest, EVERYTHING. The first get-together I worked on ground rules; leading, lundging...things like that. What kinds of things do you all feel I should concentrate on? I know it is up to me, but I also am not sure what direction I want to go. For now I mostly just want to learn Western trail and pleasure. Any ideas I would appreciate!
Thanks so much!

You are right to concentrate on the basics at first. How to gain a horse's trust from the ground is as important as actually riding, because it will carry over. You need to establish a bond with the horse and learning groundwork will help you do that.

After that, learn the basic western seat, leg aids and neck reining. Are you planning on showing or just your own pleasure riding? If you are eventually going to show, you need to get a coach to help with that as their are particulars you won't need to pay attention to ifyou are learning to ride just for fun. By all means, keep us informed. Maybe this old Texas cowboy can give you a pointer or two. Happy trails!

Welcome on board. I'm pretty new myself.
I am starting off just doing the basics too. My instructor Katie asked me if there was anything in particular I wanted to learn. I wasn't really sure, so she listed off some of the stuff I can learn. Right now, she's teaching me barrel racing. I'm sure you'd like it. You don't go around any barrels for a while. Just going around the cones. It teaches me balance, and to trust the horse.
Have fun riding!!
:)
