Thanks everyone - the day and night passed uneventfully thank goodness. :)
(apart from 2 hourly checks and soup-like feeds).

Thankyou to everyone for their help and support - looks like that old wives tale needs more research, I think I'm still of the 'old school train of thought' and had never heard that it may be ok to feed unsoaked.

Forget to add - he also ate 1/3 of a dustbin of soaked beet (and half a bag of carrots)which complicated things further since he never usually has sugarbeet. He spent a fair bit of the day lying down - I think he was just so full he needed a rest!!

:) he was probably in more danger from the carrots than the beet pulp. I bet he felt very pleased with himself :D

However you are very lucky that he didn't get into something more dangerous and this will hopefully have everyone revising security on the feed stores.

ooh yes, everyone please have a check that everything is secure. This particular lot of feed had only been moved (unbeknown to me) the day before into an open passageway of all things.
Believe me, its not worth the worry

It is a FACT that if they do break into the feed store, they will ignore the bag of opened nuts, mix or safe gear, they will make a beeline to the un-soaked beet and wolf it down by the bucket load.! Fat Cob did it with mixed grain hen food and gave himself near terminal gut rot!

I know too of ponies who have gorged on hen mash and it killed them.
