:D Hi there! I don't know what is a classed as adult or pony but I am 33 and I currently have a 15.2 mare but she has bad arthritis now and so I am purchasing (fingers-crossed, vetting today) a 14.3 coloured cob gelding who is only 5 but bomb-proof (hopefully)
I am a very nervous rider, especially out hacking, and haven't hacked out for years as my Mare is a donkey on the way out and a race-horse coming home. She scared me s******s! so I thought it best not to hack out. My favourite song to sing happened to be any nursery rhyme that popped into my head - albeit warbly as I was shaking! I got very strange looks from the country walkers!
Anyway, I went and tried this cob out and actually plucked up the courage to canter (yes, I said 'canter'!) down a country lane and back again and managed to stop him when I wanted (verryyyy pleeesed I survived). He is green in the school though and I could only get him to canter when it was going back towards the gate!
I am a bit nervous about bringing a young one on but looking forward to i at the same time. I am going to take a few steps back and start again with him as I suspect he doesn't know the correct aids.

Welcome to New Rider!!!
My name is Katharine (doh!) and I'm 21. I'm a student so don't have a horse yet but hoping to once I graduate!
I really hope the vetting goes well today, he sounds lovely. There are plenty of knowledgeable people here to help you with those schooling issues if you come across any obstacles.
Good luck and I hope we hear a lot more form you and your new friend!

Yeeeahhhh! He passed!
The vet said he was a lovely character and very suitable for what I need - it was very windy, rainy and chilly when he was being vetted.
He also commened on the fact that he didn't know his left from his right when it came to canter!
My hubby and I are starting natural horsemanship lessons and I think that it will benefit me and the new horse to start with groundwork and build a bond.
Also, I am thinking about keeping him barefoot as he has no shoes an ot the mo and had no problems hacking out - he has feet the size of dinner plates! I will speak to my farrier about it.
I am getting excited now but I don't think I will be able to collect him till next weekend.

Congratulations on your new purchase, you must be so excited :D
I am sure you will be fine bringing on a 5 year old, he sounds like he has the right temperment which counts for a lot. Bringing on a youngster is so rewarding and I am sure you will have great fun with him.
Remember to keep us updated on your progress, and don't forget to post some piccies of him :)

Just watching my miniature donkey colt tearing round the paddock I'm not sure I know what you mean by Donkey out racehorse back! :D
Congrats on your new purchase you can't go very wrong with a coloured cob.
If you want to talk Natural Horsemanship other than on the I.H.D.G. you could try NAGS http://www.nagtrader.co.uk/forum/
Looking foreward to hearing how you get on with your "short ear"

he sounds lovely. we don't hear much about cobs in this part of the world so I have a 14.1hh fine built pony. I would have loved to have got a cob , but you don't see them advertised although they do have very small cob classes at most of the shows??

Supercali - I hope all goes well with your new pony. Please keep us updated on your progress as my friend has recently bought a 6yo who needs bringing on. It will be interesting to see how you get on. I tried out the 6yo old for my friend at the weekend and even found the confidence to hack her out alone as well. Shannon, the daughter, will be having regular lessons on the new mare so this will hopefully help with the schooling and teaching. Look forward to your updates. Good Luck :)

He's home!!!!
and he's a little b*gger!! :D
I think he needs to learn some manners. I have been dragged to the feed room today while leading him to the field! and he doesn't like being told what to do!
I have done some groundwork with him today and rubbed him all over, groomed him etc but I think I still have a lot to work to do. I realised he probably would be a bit like this when I tried him out.
I am going on my first hack out on him tomorrow (fingers-crossed  ). He seemed so good on a hack when I took him out to try him but it is always more nerve-wracking when you get them home!

I've had my 15hh cob gelding for 6 years now, and bought him aged 6. Like many cobs, he can be bolshy (the hay/feed/anything that looks remotely like a bucket or feed bit is ALWAYS more interesting than anything else), and whoever came up with the saying that you can tell a gelding what to do :D !
I am a happy hacker and have never ridden him in a school (he'd wonder why he had to go in circles if I did now) but little things like teaching them to open a gate are very rewarding, and getting them used to scary things like tractors. Loopy animal, yesterday went by milk tanker very quietly, but every bird he saw was very suspicious!!!!!!
Hope your hack went OK today.
